I want to make this my home," Wainwright said. "I'm concerned about the lack of growth and management in the town. I see a lot of ineptitude at the council, in the mayor's position there is no direction, no growth. You have to say, even though you love it here, is this the way you want to see things go?...

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 17, 2019

The Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners discussed the 2020 budget and rates and a variety of other issues at their meeting last Thursday. According to Port Manager Jackie Lea, more interest had been expressed in dismantling barges at the port. However, she had learned that the port would need a shipyard permit. “I think it would be a stream of revenue in the winter, and it would only be done in the winter,” she said. “Let’s look into it and see how much it costs and how painful...

  • Working dogs are protectors of livestock

    Oct 17, 2019

To The Eagle On Sept. 25, I was sitting in my barn office at around 10 p.m. I heard a deep growl directly under my window. I looked and there stood a coyote. The coyote saw me as a threat and gave me a warning. According to The Eagle’s sheriff reports, barking dogs are a recurring problem on the island. People who move onto the island have got to understand they moved to a heavy agriculture area. Yes, we have dogs. Our dogs bark. The majority of the Islanders, however, do not understand where the problem is. Most of these dogs are working d...

  • Couple supports Richter for judge

    Oct 17, 2019

To The Eagle: We are writing in support of retaining Don Richter as Superior Court Judge for Pacific and Wahkiakum counties. Five years ago, we met Don and his family shortly after he moved to Pacific County to take the deputy prosecutor position. It didn’t take long for him to find himself at home here—serving the public, tending animals, and raising his family. His well-deserved selection and appointment by the governor last December was no surprise to his colleagues and others familiar with his resume and character. We have come to know him...

  • Cathlamet leads the US in parks per capita

To The Eagle: I googled, “What US city has the most city parks per capita?” Albion, Michigan, Population 8,700, has 17 public parks. This is approximately one park per 500 residents. This is thought to be the highest number of parks per capita of any incorporated city in the united states; wrong! Cathlamet leads the United States with the most number of parks per person. • Writer digs into facts and valid opinions

    Oct 17, 2019

To The Eagle: So. Facts and opinions actually are different things. Who knew! They are, however, not mutually exclusive. Dictionaries define a fact to be a thing that is undisputably the case, such as information used as evidence or as part of a report, and define opinion as a view or judgement not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. An opinion based upon a premise supported by verifiable facts becomes a valid opinion, making it a matter of fact. Presenting a valid opinion is an excellent method of sharing the facts of matters to readers...

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 17, 2019

MID-MONTH--We had some chilly weather at the end of last week but had some sunshine, so that was nice. Saturday was decent until some rain in the evening hours, but that didn't last long, so Sunday may have been cloudy but it was decent. We may be in for a very wet few days this week, along with some gusty winds, so if that happens, I hope you are prepared for the worst, and we'll hope for the best. Here's hoping you were able to get all your outdoor chores done on a couple of those nice, dry days that we had. THINKING OF THEM--There have been...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Oct 17, 2019

Invasive Species My late father was an outdoorsman typical of many who live in the Pacific Northwest. He loved to hunt and fish or just go hiking in the woods. As a child he made me very aware of the plants around us and their various uses. He would tell me what could be eaten and what certain plants such as poison oak would do to you if you used it as a toiletry item. Such knowledge stayed with me through my brief military career which further enhanced my curiosity about plants. I never became...
