    There are only two days left until the 1st Annual Wahkiakum County Oktoberfest. Starting from 1 p.m. this Saturday, there will be live music, fantastic food and a well stocked beer garden.     The Napavine Tigers claimed a 32-20 win over the Wahkiakum Mules in a key Central League contest last Friday. The win left the Tigers in a position to challenge Toutle Lake for the league championship, and the loss left the Mules in a must-win-out position to be able to compete for the third place playoff berth from the league.   • SJFC to offer health care training for parents

    A workshop on “What to do when your child gets sick” will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 8 at St. James Family Center. The workshop focuses on health care for young children, ages 0-5; however all Wahkiakum and Naselle families are welcome to enroll.     Candidates for two positions on the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners took questions from the public at a forum at the Skamokawa Grange on Monday night. Citizens focused many of their remarks on the county’s budgetary problems, the proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal and maintaining county funded services.     The Wahkiakum Lady Mule volleyball team kept its perfect record alive with two wins in league play this week. On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Vancouver and swept the Columbia Adventist Kodiaks 25-13, 25-18, 26-24. Sarah Doumit led the attack with 11 kills. Ashley Helms had five kills, and Blaine Land had three blocks and four kills. Last Thursday, the Mules swept White Pass 25-15, 25-12, 25-9.   • Medical reserve corps to form

    By next summer, Wahkiakum County will form a group to assist the community in case of a large scale emergency. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is comprised of retired doctors and nurses and other health professionals that could help the county in case of pandemic. Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright said the MRC was founded in 2002 in the wake of the September 11 attacks. In his State of the Union Address that year, President George W.   • Man sentenced to prison for poaching, animal cruelty

    A Longview man convicted of poaching and animal cruelty was sentenced in Wahkiakum County Superior Court this week. Mickey Ray Gordon, 36, was accused of criminal trespass, malicious mischief, hunting bear, cougar, bobcat and lynx with the aid of a dog and animal cruelty dating back to January 2007. According to court records, Gordon stomped and kicked a hunting dog while using two shock collars, one around the animal’s neck and the other around the animal’s genital area. Judge Michael J.     Cathlamet resident Jennifer Johnson Hanigan was one of 688 candidates who passed the 2008 Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) examination, the association announced Monday. Of the 962 candidates who took the exam, 71.5 percent passed. Administered in two parts over a three-day period in July in Bellevue, the bar exam includes a substantive law exam and an exam on the Rules of Professional Conduct.     A dredge doing ship channel maintenance should start beach nourishment on Puget Island’s Sunny Sands this week. Wahkiakum County Public Works Director Pete Ringen presented a completed US Army Corps of Engineers permit for the project to the county board of commissioners on Tuesday. With the board’s approval, Ringen signed the permit on behalf of the county. The project will allow dredgers to place sand in eroding areas near Pancake Point.     The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce bids farewell to its director, Tanja Winebrenner, this week. The U.S. Rural Development capacity building grant that funded the Chamber position has ended.
