On October 26 at 6 p.m., Cowlitz County Master Gardener Jon Griffin will discuss the benefits of using rain barrels. Participants will take home a rain barrel from the class. Griffon will discuss how to get started, what to look for when buying a suitable barrel and how to construct a system that will make economic and environmental sense. Twin Harbors will open to razor clam digging along with Copalis and Mocrocks beaches when the fall season gets underway Oct. 14. Shellfish managers gave the okay Tuesday on a six-day razor clam dig beginning Oct. 14 at Twin Harbors after marine toxin tests indicate clams there are safe to eat. The Kalama Chinooks exploded for five third quarter touchdowns to roll to a 48-6 win over the Wahkiakum Mules last Friday. The host Chinooks led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter as Jacob Herz scored on a 63-yard run. In the second quarter, the Mules put together a scoring drive which Hank Ferguson completed on a 3-yard run. The conversion attempt failed, and the Mules trailed their hosts 8-6 at halftime. The Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team won two matches this week and took second place in the Lumberjill Invite at R.A. Long over the weekend. Last Thursday, the Lady Mules easily dispatched their host, Winlock in three sets, 25-9, 25-10, and 25-14, to win the match. Makenzie Anderson had nine kills. The Wahkiakum Mules cross country team traveled to Longview last Wednesday to compete in a Greater St. Helens League 2A meet. The 5,000 meter course was set at Lake Sacagawea and hosted by Mark Morris. The Mules competed against teams from Mark Morris, Ridgefield, and R.A. Long. Senior Alex Peachey Mellis led the boys, taking 57th place with a time of 25:20. Sophomore Seth Kuljis was close behind, taking 58th place with a time of 25:22.
