VFW sponsors youth essay contest The Cathlamet VFW, in cooperation with Cathlamet schools is promoting the VFW's National Essay Contests. For all high school students, the subject is "Is there pride in serving in our military?" The 2008 national winner was from Washington State, winning approximately $35,000 in scholarships. We are starting our Fairgrounds winterization projects! A huge thanks to Ed Stevens, Mark Crary, Barbara Clark and Georgie Billings for moving our big freezers, refrigerators, ice machine, ice cream freezer and stoves out of the food booth and onto the entertainment stage. Our new stage built by Contractor Mark Crary can hold the weight of these appliances because Mark used 2” by 10” floor joists to support the floor. In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen.
