  • Cross Country Results

    Oct 13, 2011

October 4 at Ilwaco Wahkiakum results Wahkiakum Coach Marie Riley filed this report: Last week's Ilwaco meet found us with a smaller than normal team. We had kids out of town and others not feeling so well. The weather didn't exactly cooperate, either, and most of the kids would have been happy to just not run that day. It had been raining and the trails were less than optimum; very muddy and slippery. Kids' times are continuing to fall and you know that they are out there working hard. In the high school race Collan Riley placed 15th in...

  • Duck Inn closes doors and era

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

WET WET--It looks like we've got a wet week ahead of us with mist, drizzle, light showers, showers or rain in the forecast, which in layman's terms just means wet! We did have part of our weekend fairly dry, so it wasn't too bad. With our damper weather, I know it was time to kick on some heat, so even though the temperatures weren't always that low, the dampness just creeps in your ole bones and they just ache for some warmth! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 13-19 are Debbie Chamberlain, Heidi Heywood, Sami McKinley,...

  • Wahkiakum Food Bank also sees growing needs

    Ruby Murray|Oct 13, 2011

“The Wahkiakum Food Bank is seeing more people needing help, but it has just received a donation from an elementary school food drive,” Director Jimmie Lou Cleveland said this week. The food bank operates from the Health and Human Services campus but it is not affiliated with the county. Cleveland said, “There has been a steady increase with lots of new people. The numbers we see keep climbing.” Cash donations are down. “The little people” aren’t contributing as they had been…The food banks serves about 18-27 families a week,” Clevel...

  • Skamokawa PO faces closure

    Ruby Murray|Oct 13, 2011

Skamokawa – Over 40 people gathered Tuesday to protest the proposed closing of the Skamokawa Post Office. They gathered information about the process, sought to understand the chances of affecting the postal service decision and made a case for the post office as the center of the Skamokawa community. They shared some laughs and left no doubt about their commitment to work to keep the post office doors open. Skamokawa was targeted for closure because it took in less than $27,500 revenue annually and generated less than two hours of...

  • Grange News

    Darlene Ammer|Oct 13, 2011

There’s good news and bad news regarding cleaning up the lot next to the Grange Hall. First off, Grays River Grange would like to give a big thank you to Stan Sorenson and Robinson Brothers Construction for donating time and equipment for clearing the lot. That property was a drain on community morale and the Grange appreciates all of the positive comments about its new condition. But here’s the bad news; as it turned out, it took nine containers to remove the rubble. Stan operated the excavator and he estimates that the debris in the houses th...

  • Food bank feels stress of increased demand

    Ruby Murray|Oct 13, 2011

In the face of increasing demand and fewer donations, Helping Hand Food bank is struggling to meet local need. One of two county food banks, Helping Hand is seeing more new faces and serving more people than they have in the past. “I see the same thing here that I’ve seen at every food bank I’ve ever worked at,” said Helping Hand volunteer Chuck Burton. “People would like to work. For them to need help is demoralizing. Most people don’t know how tough the economy is right now. Some of these people are disabled, but a lot can’t find a job.” Help...

  • Fishery issues

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

  • Council considers preliminary budget

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

The Cathlamet Town Council took a first look at the preliminary budget for 2012 at a special meeting Tuesday night. In its preliminary form, the budget totals $1.27 million in revenue and $1.29 in expenses, a deficit of $17,000 (numbers are rounded). The council will have to make adjustments in the Current Expense Fund of $60,000 if it wants to end the 2012 year with a cash balance on hand, said Councilmember David Goodroe. The 2011 budget totaled $1.69 million, but it includes uncompleted street improvement work that could be bumped into...

  • Commissioner lobbies natural resources board

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

Wahkiakum County Commissioner Dan Cothren took his concerns about the harvest of timber from county timber trust lands to the state Board of Natural Resources on Monday. Cothren testified at the board's meeting, urging the commission to stand up to environmentalists threatening to file suits to block harvest of timber on land that could be habitat for endangered marbled murrelets. The department has withdrawn sales, including one on county timber trust land, under the threat of suits. The county needs the revenue, Cothren said. Peter Goldmark,...

  • Commissioners approve emergency manager position

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business at their meeting on Tuesday. The board approved a request from the sheriff's department to create a temporary emergency services department. Sheriff Jon Dearmore and Undersheriff Mark Howie explained that the county is picking up grants that formerly went to the Town of Cathlamet for an emergency services director. Howie presented a budget analysis that showed that by assuming the grants, the county could have an emergency services director, the grant revenue would lower the county's...

  • Protection of one species to detriment of another

    Oct 13, 2011

To The Eagle: I wish to thank Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler for co-sponsoring the endangered salmon predation prevention act (H.R. 946). On October 5, the House Resources Committee voted 29-13 to send this bill to the full house for passage. One can only hope the full House of Representatives and the US Senate will finally act on this long overdue problem of seal and sea lion predation of salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and smelt runs which are in fact being decimated by these predators. These predators have become way over-populated since being list...

  • Only two options in public safety war

    Oct 13, 2011

To The Eagle: Where is the public safety war with the mayor going? The only certain outcome of the mayor's attempted power grab is a drastic weakening of the Cathlamet fire and ambulance service. For no real reason other than a power grab by the mayor putting public safety at risk. So far it has benefited Fire District 4, which has received many new applications from volunteers, which is good for the areas served by District 4, but bad for residents of Cathlamet who are served by the Cathlamet volunteer fire department. This raises the...

  • Negative consequences of emotion over facts

    Oct 13, 2011

To The Eagle: The letter to The Eagle by attorney George Hanigan has raised some serious questions about the direction of the conflict between the fire department and the Town of Cathlamet. The first concern is the actual disagreement between the requirements of the state auditors and the fire districts, in which the auditors apparently were not able to get access to all the required records of the fire districts. Conflict between the state auditors and any government or private entity is not a good scenario. Transparency and open accounting...

  • Domestic violence awareness month continues

    Oct 13, 2011

To The Eagle: We are almost halfway through October and The Charlotte House continues to sponsor activities that will hopefully bring awareness to domestic violence and get people thinking about how they can be a part of the solution to put an end to the violence. On Tuesday, October 4, I met with our county commissioners where they read and signed a Proclamation declaring October 2011 Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This can be viewed elsewhere in this issue of The Eagle. Thank you to our Commissioners for once again showing your support....
