Altoona native Vivian Josephine Smalley 86, of Rosburg, died March 2, 2010 in Longview due to complications following heart surgery. She was born March 15, 1923 on her parents homestead on Hitchcock Creek, near Altoona. Her parents were Helge and Jenny (Buskala) Saari. They owned a family farm and dairy on Hitchcock Creek. Helge was the Altoona milkman and delivered to the area by boat. Vivian attended grade school in Altoona and graduated from Naselle High School. She enjoyed playing the accordion and swimming. Cathlamet resident, Corey Andreau Barnes, 20, passed away March 4, 2010 at OHSU in Portland, Ore. He was born February 20, 1990 in Longview to Kimberly Mathis and Mel Barnes. He attended Wahkiakum and Kelso Schools. He had worked in construction, timber falling and commercial fishing. Corey was a certified firefighter, he fought forest fires in Eastern Washington. The Washington Department of Transportation is planning another rockfall project along SR 4 at Stella. Work is planned to start this May. The department recently awarded a contract to Granite Construction Company of Bellingham, who bid $109,806 for the project. The contractor will remove loose rock, unstable soil, trees and other debris from this slope. In addition, crews will install rock anchors to hold large rocks in place to further stabilize the rock slope above the highway. The department says the project will reduce the risk of rocks...
Improvements are starting to go from the planning stage to the actual project in motion stage at our fairgrounds. Neil Beerbower is chairman of the Fair Boards Arena Committee. His first big project this year is to get rid of the standing water by the front of the arena. Wahkiakum PUD commissioners discussed a proposed project to bring treated solid waste to western Wahkiakum County and other topics at their meeting on March 2. Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County may get access to county funds to completed facility installation at Svensen Park on Puget Island. The port completed basic work at the park last year, installing a boat launch and dock. However, restrooms and playground equipment haven't been installed, and port representatives on Tuesday asked county commissioners to provide funding to help the port complete that work. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to new plans for culvert and streambank work along the Elochoman and Grays rivers. The Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) plans to apply for state and federal grants to undertake the projects, said Amy Ammer, CREST habitat restoration specialist. Cathlamet may host a national meeting of the Northwest Steam Society in August, 2011. Following a Tuesday presentation by society spokesman Norm Davis of Astoria, members of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce said they would support the event if the society chooses Cathlamet as the location of its three-day annual gathering. To The Eagle: We would like to make our neighbors on Morgan Drive and Greenwood Road aware that on Friday night, the 12th, Buzz started to take our miniature Dachshund for a walk. He did not get the door closed behind him when our dog was attacked by a black and white dog that appeared to be at least part pit bull. Thank God our daughter and son-in-law were there. This should have brought relief to an already economically depressed SW Washington, but the latest Daily News article cites unemployment in Cowlitz is up .03 percent.
