Gravel will be added to the top of the levee to create a one lane, twelve foot wide road that will be closed to regular traffic and gated at both ends. Willows will be planted later in the year. And according to Ed Saldana who works as...
A recent phone scam frightened a few local businesses and residents when the caller threatened to turn off power if their electric bill was not paid within a very short period of time. The Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners want county residents to know these calls are not coming from their local utility. “That is not how we do business,” General Manager Dave Tramblie said at Tuesday morning’s PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting. The scam has been reported to the sheriff’s office. During th...
Local elk hunting activists are hosting a meeting next Wednesday to present information on elk hoof rot disease. Dan Cothren, a Wahkiakum County commissioner, has been lobbying the state Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to act on the issue for several years. The disease causes a hoof to become deformed, and the animal subsequently goes lame and dies of starvation or predation. It is widely affecting elk in Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Pacific counties and is found in other areas. WDFW biologists have tried to determine the cause of the disease...

To The Eagle: October is here and once again The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center, is raising awareness around the issues of domestic violence. We have placed purple ribbons up and down Main Street Cathlamet. Several individuals and businesses have requested ribbons to adorn their porches and buildings to show support to survivors and the work we do. We need this month to bring awareness to the devastating issues that surround domestic violence victims and survivors. We need people to talk about the fact that 3 out of 4...
Tribal and non-tribal commercial fishers, as well as lower Columbia River anglers, are sweeping in tens of thousands of salmon this year even while fishery managers keep a close watch on impacts to protected stocks such as so-called “B” steelhead bound for the most part for Idaho and wild Lower River Hatchery fall chinook salmon tules. The salmon return to the Columbia-Snake river system in 2014 has been huge, though slightly below expectations. In preseason the Technical Advisory Committee’s federal, state and tribal members predicted that...

"We think it's something that Cathlamet really needs," said Evie Pistone. Her husband Bob agreed. Man...
The short agenda of Wahkiakum County board of commissioners meeting Tuesday covered items ranging from utility connection fees to reorganizing the Public Works and County Road departments. Rosedale businessman Bob Jungers raised the utility issue with an email suggesting the board "reconsider the agreement you have with the Town of Cathlamet regarding the $3,000 fee for new (sewer) hook-ups" in the lower Boege Road area. "You are into that project, I believe, for $312,000 for eight years with a return of zero, and a benefit to constituents and...
Drop Anchor Brewery in Cathlamet wants to help Wahkiakum School District improve its ailing football stadium grandstand. Part of Drop Anchor Brewery’s business plan is to be involved in the community, but when it comes to the local school district, the brewery’s investors worry that the nature of their business hinders them from giving. “It’s difficult trying to help the high school,” Richard Erickson said, “because those are kids and we’re alcohol. When this grandstand thing came up, it seemed like a natural fit.” “We decided that we w...
TAKING TURNS--It's Fall; that time when you get some sun, you get some rain and everything in between. I hope you're enjoying the Fall colors, although you may not be enjoying the falling leaves, as they make for some miserable yard clean up, clogged gutters and on the road, they can make for slick conditions, but hey, falling leaves is better than falling snow, which some areas have seen already. Now that's bad! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Oct. 9-15 are Joan Evenson, Matt Helms, Jeff Baldwin, Justin McClain, Kristina...
