    “Don’t touch the bats!” That is the message from Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright. This year, there have been three reports of rabid bats in Wahkiakum County--one on Puget Island, one in Cathlamet, and one on the Westend. There has been at least one confirmed bite of a child, who was with four other children at the time, on the Westend. All five children received prophylaxis medication, Bright said.     The Wahkiakum PUD board of commissioners met Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics. PUD Lineman Shane Pfenniger gave the board an update on the boring machine the PUD purchased last summer. He explained how the equipment works and about the problems they have faced since installation. He said the tracking device isn’t working as well as hoped and felt a new one would be beneficial.     The Wahkiakum Lady Mule volleyball team swept two Central League opponents in action this past week. On Tuesday, the Mules rolled over visiting Adna 25-20, 25-21 and 25-11. Shelby Deaton played well at the net, and Paige Kehrli’s jump serves caused the Pirates some problems. Last Thursday, the Mules traveled to Mossyrock and beat the Vikings 25-12, 25-22, 26-24.     The Wahkiakum Mule football team gave the Pe Ell Trojans a couple kicks enroute to a 48-21 win in the Mule homecoming game last Friday. The Mules 21-0 after one quarter and 41-0 at haltime. Mule Coach Eric Hansen started the junior varsity in the second half, and after the Pe Ell starters scored 21 points, the Mule starters came back in to punch in another touchdown and put the game out of reach. “The team came ready to play,” Hansen said. “They were intense.   • County to repair leaking Deep River dike

    East Deep River Dike Road will be closed next Tuesday so the Wahkiakum County Road Department can seal a leaking the dike. Public Works Director Pete Ringen said the leak was discovered near an area that was excavated in the 1990’s for installation of new drain pipes. The road crew will excavate to the level of the leak and about two-thirds of the way across the dike.     An estimated 120 residents of Oregon and Washington rallied Monday on the steps of the Washington State Capitol to show opposition to a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and pipeline proposed across the Columbia River from Puget Island.
