  • Covered Bridge dinner is 'the best fund raiser'

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 8, 2015

The 8th Annual Covered Bridge Dinner was held on Saturday. The warm fall afternoon cooled as the evening came on and the light faded from the sky, making it hard to make out the children playing in a nearby field. Jeffrey Reynolds serenaded tables with his violin. Joel Fitts recited some cowboy poetry. Table by table, participants made their way to the tables where food was being served. Later, the adults remained in the covered bridge, which had been strung with lights, watching or bidding for...

  • PUD adjusts water policy

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 8, 2015

Changes to the water adjustment policy were approved Tuesday morning at the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting with a 2-0 vote. Commissioner Bob Jungers chose to abstain from the vote. The policy allows customers to be compensated in the event of abnormal water loss. Before the change, the PUD offered an adjustment of 25 percent of the excess water, one time over the life of their account. The policy will now offer one adjustment of 50 percent of the excess water every five year...

  • Flat market cooling county timber sales

    Rick Nelson|Oct 8, 2015

Wahkiakum County should expect another year of low revenue from state managed county trust timberland, county officials learned Tuesday. A decline in log prices has led the Department of Natural Resources to reduce its estimate of revenue expected from a county trust timber sale. DNR District Manager Steve Ogden told county commissioners that they could expect $921,840 from the Mill Fir Sorts timber sale in 2016, which, he said was down from an earlier estimate a bit over $1 million. And in 2017, the agency has planned a sale that should...

  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness month

    Oct 8, 2015

To The Eagle: Happy October! Most of us are thinking about fall, pumpkins and Halloween and the ever popular pumpkin spice everything! Here at The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center, we are thinking about raising awareness in our community around the issues of domestic violence. After a year of high profile domestic violence cases in the media, it shouldn’t surprise us that American’s awareness of domestic violence is on the rise. According to Mary Kay’s 6th annual Truth About Abuse survey, this is what was learned: • It...

  • Friday night slights

    Oct 8, 2015

To The Eagle: I attended my first Wahkiakum High School football game this past week. The effort by the Wahkiakum players was really something to see and admire. It was apparent how much work and dedication the players and coaches put into the football program. The cheerleaders do a number of difficult routines all game long in nearly flawless unison. I am sure they must practice and work hard and long to accomplish that. The student (Micca Cothren) who sang the National Anthem was amazing. The large number of family, friends and fans of these...

  • Former mayor offers two options for water

    Oct 8, 2015

To the Editor: Cathlamet’s Town Council made the right decision when it opted to begin the process of replacing the intake at the water plant. Nonetheless, I fear this might not dissuade the Department of Health from limiting the number of new connections. The DOH is pushing not just for system improvements, but for the town and the PUD to resolve their longstanding contract dispute. That will happen in one of two ways: the PUD will agree to a deal that adequately compensates the town for its water, or opt instead to build its own water plant t...

  • Columbus Day storm anniversary Monday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 8, 2015

NICE START--As this week begins, it's pretty doggone nice out there, and instead of fall, it seems like summer has returned. Of course, by the time you read this, we may be back to a cooling trend, so we'll be more normal for this time of year. Whenever we are still mowing our lawns every week in October, you know it's still pretty decent out there! The only thing I didn't enjoy about this wonderful weather was the bombardment of lady bugs and other insects, which just seemed to be everywhere! However, several forecasters are talking about the...

Some of Washington's most popular hunting seasons get under way in October, when hunters take to the field for deer, ducks, geese and other game birds. Migratory waterfowl are expected to make another strong showing this year, said Mick Cope, game manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). With an increase in breeding populations of migratory birds, waterfowl hunters should expect great hunting this year, depending on weather. “Big game hunts also look promising this fall,” Cope said. “Hunters had a pretty good seaso...
