Claussen's floral business has the front quarters, and Longtain's flooring and home decorating business is in the back rooms. • Sellers adjusting to real estate market

    Stevan Morgain|Oct 8, 2009

The last to rise and the last to decline: That’s how Wahkiakum’s realtors describe the county’s property values. In 2003 the phenomenon now known as the “real estate bubble” was first used to describe the inflated property values in places like King County. Unfortunately for everyone else, the bubble expanded to encompass almost every square inch of land in Washington, and seemingly overnight, home values doubled while homeowners slept. In 2007, the bubble began to pop and the vacuum it created exposed how mortgage brokers, banks, and the g...

  • On Scene

    Undersheriff Jon L Dearmore|Oct 8, 2009

In 2007, I started writing a monthly column in an attempt to keep you, our citizens, in touch with various avenues of information relating to the sheriff’s office. It was pretty well received, but within the last several years, the budget for our office was cut. Sheriff Bardsley has green-lighted me to write the “On Scene” column again, perhaps quarterly. Just before the 2009 Wahkiakum County Fair, Stevan Morgain wrote a story for The Wahkiakum County Eagle about a program I was starting up using the Fatal Vision® goggles in conju...

The Wahkiakum Mules made the trip to Pe Ell last Friday and came home with a satisfying 28-14 win over the Trojans to go 3-0 in Central League football. Pe Ell's Lorenzo Avalos opened the game with a 94-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game, but from there on, the Mules running game took control. The Mules ran 18 plays in the first quarter, 17 on the ground, and took a 7-6 lead Zack Schneider's five-yard run at 9:52. Lars Blix kicked the first of his four conversion kicks of the night for the lead. The Mules scored twice in the secon...

"I want to be your congressman in part to restore trust in government," he told a crowd of close to 20 persons gathered in the commissioners meeting room of the county courthouse. Russell offered ideas on a...

County Commissioners Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Lisa Marsyla confirmed their intention to transfer the clinic to the health center on Tuesday. Wally Wright, a member of the Cathlamet Fire Department, asked the board Tuesday to reconsider the transfer. The health center mode of operation won't allow as much sharing of personnel and resources with the county's emergency medical...

The project will extend and expand the ferry landing, making it more accessible to large trucks, and also improve the ramp. Cothren and Brady expressed interest in the potential savings. They discussed the...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 8, 2009

The Cathlamet town council took action in a special meeting Monday to discuss and act on a variety of issues. Council members Bill Talbott, David Goodroe, Wally Wright and Steve McNicholas--Bob Rendler was excused--agreed after long discussion that the remodeling of City Hall should include a complete cement floor on the lower level in the project and bid specifications being developed. The work would be part of an overall project to strengthen the structure's walls, floors and foundation. Critics of the proposal said that without a set plan...

  • Bankruptcyfiling derails town center sale

    Stevan Morgain|Oct 8, 2009

The fate of the historic Skamokawa Town Center is still in limbo. The auction to sell the town center and all its assets was scheduled for last Friday at 10 a.m. but the auction took an unexpected twist after its current owner, Richard G. Hofmann or Miraculous Properties, LLC, used a legal maneuver to postpone the sale. Unbeknownst to the parties who had arrived on the front steps of the Wahkiakum Court House to bid on the center, Hoffman had filed for bankruptcy the day before the auction. His filing set in motion a legal situation that must...
