Summer days and winter nights, at least that’s how it seems to me. The night sky has been brilliant with all the stars shining so brightly, perfect for sitting in the hot tub. Looks like more rain is predicted for later in the week, though. News from Naselle: Games coming up this week for the Naselle sports teams include: Thursday – volleyball in Naselle against Raymond at 5:45 p.m.; Friday – football at PeEll at 7 p.m.; Saturday – cross country Invite at Fort Worden; Tuesday – volleyball at South Bend at 5:45 p.m. G...
The Wahkiakum youth football team played a great home game in front of a good sized crowd on Saturday and came away with a convincing win over Swanson's Fuel. Coordinator Kevin Patching said "the mini-Mules held Swanson's to 80 yards rushing and none passing. Defensive highlights were Jordan Crawford intercepting a pass that was tipped by Michael Zurick and Hank Ferguson recovering a fumble when Parker Patching crushed a Swanson runner in the backfield. Crawford led the team with eight tackles followed by Ferguson and Zurick with seven each,...

The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team played its best and its worst matches of the season this past week. The Mules lost 3-1 at Pe Ell last Thursday and followed that Tuesday with a 3-2 upset over the Toutle Lake Ducks, a perennial power in Class 2B volleyball. "We followed our worst match of the season with our best," said Coach Jeff Rooklidge. "No one seems to know how long it's been since Toutle lost a league match; I think it's been 15 years or more since we've beaten them." The Mules won the first two matches 25-23, 25-22; Toutle then won...
"We can't turn over the ball," Wahkiakum Mule football Coach Eric Hansen said last week before the Mules took on the Mossyrock Vikings in the Mule homecoming football game. On the Mules' first offensive play, a slant pass went high and through the hands of the Mule receiver and into the hands of a Viking defender at the Mules' 35-yard line. The Vikings used the field position to score and take a 6-0 lead at 8:20 of the first quarter. The Mules didn't panic, however. They responded with four unanswered touchdowns to roll to a 25-6 Central...

NOT BAD--The evenings are a bit crisp, but the days have been pretty pleasant. While I kept expecting rain with those clouds we had on Saturday, it never showed up and the sun was shining brightly on Sunday after the morning fog, so that was a nice surprise as I thought for sure we'd be seeing some rain by then. This dry weather meant it was time to get the lawn mower out once again and start putting away the patio stuff in order to prepare for the upcoming rainy season. Forecasters say that we could have a miserable winter, so just in case the...

“Too much water and not enough drainage.” That’s how Wahkiakum School District Maintenance Supervisor Bob McClintock summarized the problem that has prevented Wahkiakum softball and baseball teams from using the multifield complex constructed several years ago just east of the high school football stadium. McClintock and others gathered recently at a Wahkiakum School Board meeting to discuss the field and to hear Damon Richardson from Pacific Sports Turf of Tualatin, Oregon present his company’s proposal on installation of a drainage system....
According to the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), 40 percent of Pacific Northwest homes use electric water heaters, which account for 15 to 20 percent of residential energy use. Newly developed heat pump water heaters will use 50 percent or more less energy, which could lead to substantial savings for residential customers. Wahkiakum PUD is one of 11 utilities in the Northwest selected to participate in a study of the efficiency of heat pump water heaters in residential settings. There are a total of 40 treatment sites in BPA’s region a...
Good changes are in store for the nation's public health system, but it may take perserverance to achieve them, county health officials said Tuesday. Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright and department supervisors went over some of the probable outcomes with county commissioners. In other business, the commission scheduled a public hearing on a change to the county's Enhanced 9-1-1 ordinance that would increase the tax on phones from 50 cents to 70 cents. A public hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. on October 19. Before the public...
The 2010 general election is bearing down on the voters of Wahkiakum County; the county auditors office will mail the vote-by-mail ballots to votes on October 15. Candidates for local and regional offices gathered at the Skamokawa Grange September 28 for a forum; another is scheduled next Tuesday, 7 p.m., at Johnson Park, Rosburg. The Grays River Grange is sponsoring that forum. Following are some highlights of the give and take at the Skamokawa forum. State representative, Position 1 Incumbent Dean Takko, a Democrat, reviewed his history: He g...
To The Eagle: I don't think our nation disciplines terrorists in cells in such a manner for being non-compliant. What happened to plain old isolation? Looks like I need to clarify a couple items about the jail beating incident July 16, 2010. When I wrote my initial writings back in July trying to get the word out about this incident. I thought our son was cuffed in his cell. I had since learned that he was not cuffed, but was in his cell. Undersheriff Jon Dearmore said at the forum in Skamokawa that my letters were placed in mailboxes. The few...
To The Eagle: One would expect that getting information from a public office would not be difficult or next to impossible. After one month of persistence I have had the official Wahkiakum County sales study used to compute the Puget Island R4 valuations forwarded to me and it wasn’t by the Assessor’s Office. Although the Assessor’s office has “one in the mail” it has not yet arrived. There are errors in this study. Even though the new appraiser is moving swiftly to correct valuations as property owners speak up, there are a lot of people wh...
To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County needs a Sheriff who is action oriented and ready to make real changes. The alleged assault in the Wahkiakum County jail happened on July 16 and the inmate was not given medical care until four days later, on the 20th. Further, the public was not notified of this incident until the September, 25, 2010 article in The Daily News. Jon Dearmore has the word accountability listed as part of his platform on his website, and yet he failed to be accountable to the citizens when this incident occurred. What else are they...
To The Eagle: Recently, my husband Dick Watts and I spent a week and a half in Cathlamet, finalizing the purchase of our new home. During that period of time, we met dozens of people. Warm, friendly, easy to talk to, and eager to make our acquaintance. In fact, Dick and I marvel to ourselves that we have already made more friends in Cathlamet than we made during 28 years in our current neighborhood in Southern California! Now we'd like to take a moment to publicly thank all of you for welcoming us into your community. All of you, but...
