I recently approached Sheriff Bardsley with the idea of doing a monthly article to educate and inform our Citizens about what is happening with Law and Justice in Wahkiakum County. He has always had an open-door policy in our office and is a great supporter of crime prevention and volunteerism, so it was no surprise when he approved my idea. “On scene," or “10-97” in 10 code is the terminology we use when arriving on scene of any call. I want you to be on scene with us. I plan on writing this article once a month because I want you know what...

Deep River resident Pam Anderson asked about progress on the Westend water extension project, and where water system grant money is being used. PUD Manager David Tramblie responded that there has been no action on the Westend water extension, which Anderson and others would like so that they have public water along SR 4 at Salme Hill. The PUD was awarded grant money to replace a pipe on Puget...
October 4 , 2007 The Wahkiakum Mule junior varsity football team earned a win and a tie in their last two games. On September 24, the Mules beat the Mossyrock Vikings 19-8, avenging a defeat earlier this season. "The game was not as close as the final score," said Coach Kevin Patching. "The mules controlled the game start to finish and had a chance to score three more times, but two fumbles stalled drives. We were able to overcome penalties because of strong running and great line blocking." Playing good defense were Cameron Elliott, Jeff Vik,...

It was pretty close to an ideal homecoming football game last Friday at Wahkiakum High School. The Mule football team did pretty much as they pleased enroute to a 47-0 win over the White Pass Panthers, and the rain threatened but never showed to dampen the homecoming court. The Mules rolled up 388 yards rushing and completed four of eight passes, all in the first half. The varsity opened the third quarter with a six-minute touchdown drive, and after that, the junior varsity came on and added another on a solid drive in the fourth quarter. The...

When it comes to marijuana, Washington state is considered an M7 state, meaning one of the top seven states in the country for marijuana grow operations, Wahkiakum County Sheriff Deputy Gary Howell said Tuesday. How much marijuana recovered will vary from year to year, Howell said. Three years ago, deputies recovered $1.2 million in street value of the plant, but this year only $3,000 has been recovered. That is a difference of 1200 plants versus 100. Sometimes the deputies will fly with the Army/National Guard, which have an air wing that is...
Wahkiakum County officials discussed Tuesday plans to replace a malfunctioning storm drain at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. In other business, commissioners heard about plans for county wide flu shots and talked about a variety of other issues. County officials were surprised to learn last November that in decades past, county personnel had installed a storm drain connected to a tide gate along Skamokawa Creek to drain water from the Fairgrounds area. That tide gate hasn’t functioned for years, and in last year’s flooding, it allowed water to...
