Photo by Rick Nelson. It didn't take long for the Wahkiakum Mule football team to put its stamp on the visiting Toutle Lake Ducks last Friday. After kicking off, the Mule defense stifled the Duck offense and forced a punt. The ball rolled out of bounds at the Mule 10-yard line, very good field position for Toutle Lake. However, no problem for the Mule o...

Over 500 people came - the largest crowd ever assembled in Wahkiakum county - to honor one man. The courtroom filled with people, hundreds more lined the streets unable to hear the words of tribute pronounced by the speakers inside. Thus was the funeral of George Henry “Hank” Hanigan reported in the Columbia River Sun in 1947. “Hey maybe you can write my epitaph” said George Hanigan (Hank’s son) sitting at a table in PJ’s Restaurant recently. “I’ll write it for free,” I said, "but let’s get through the interview first.” It wasn’t just me he...

The Eagle would like to interview couples and families who are using the Domestic Partnership arrangement and tell their stories....

Wahkiakum County C...

Naselle’s students won a coveted honor from education officials in Washington D.C. last week, but new state graduation requirements for math will place pressure on students to continue their quest for academic excellence. Last week the Department of Education lauded Naselle Junior-Senior High School for “dramatic improvements” on test scores among students from disadvantaged homes and ranking above the 90th percentile of schools nationwide, performance that placed it among the 314 public and private schools awarded the coveted Blue Ribbon Schoo...
It will be historian vs. historian when Irene Martin and Mike Rees, both of Skamokawa, present different but complimentary viewpoints of the history of the Pillar Rock area on the lower Columbia River. Pillar Rock has been a navigational landmark on the river throughout human history. From this area, the Lewis and Clark party may or may not have been able to see the "Ocian in View." From its early trading days, to the cannery period and beyond, the historians will talk about how this area played an important role in the evolution of life and...

The road will require much cut and fill work and retaining wall construction where...
The Bonneville Power Administration’s billing philosophy is changing. That’s the word from the representative who met with Wahkiakum’s PUD commissioners September 15. The changes will make power more costly to the PUD - like buying milk at the market. Bonneville is forcing Wahkiakum PUD to view itself as more of a for-profit business, selling individual electrical usage as part of a market system. PUD Commissioners Bob Jungers, Esther Gregg and Larry Reese welcomed Bonneville representatives Shannon Green and account specialists Wally Rogha...
