  • Celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day at the Cowlitz Public Shooting Range

    The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is partnering with the Cowlitz Public Shooting Range to sponsor a free shooting event for youth in celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The event is Saturday, Sept. 26, and will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cowlitz Public Shooting Range, located at 1000 Toutle Park Rd. in Castle Rock (three quarters of a mile east of I-5, exit 52).   • Silver Alerts begin in Washington

    Law enforcement agencies in Wash. began using a new notification to alert the public of missing persons who fit the criteria for a “Silver Alert.” A Silver Alert will be activated when a missing person 60 years of age or older, suffering from a form of dementia, is not able to return to safety without assistance.     For the second week in a row, the Wahkiakum Mule football team fell hard to a top-ranked Class 2B football team. Last Friday, the Adna Pirates beat the Mules 39-0. The young Mules, with a majority of the starters being underclassmen, struggled against the upperclassmen of the Pirates, and injuries took a toll. Zach Brown, the Mules' starting quarterback, sustained an injury to his throwing hand early in the first quarter.     The Wahkiakum Mules Volleyball team won a tournament over the weekend and added to their win column on Tuesday, bringing their record to 3-0 and getting off to a good start for the 2015 season. The Lady Mules traveled to Morton/White Pass on Tuesday and beat the Timberwolves handily in three sets to take the match, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-12.     The forecasted run of fall chinook salmon into the Columbia River rose to 1,095,900, more than 15 percent higher than the preseason forecast of 925,300 chinook. Reporting the increase Sept. 17 to the two-state Columbia River Compact, the U.S. v Oregon Technical Advisory Committee said that of the higher forecast, 685,000 fish are upriver bright chinook and 139,500 are Bonneville Pool Hatchery tule chinook.
