  • Mules crunch Cardinals 18-2

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

A wet night proved to be to the Wahkiakum Mules' liking as they dominated the Winlock Cardinals for an 18-2 Central League football win last Friday. The Cardinals fumbled the ball seven times under pressure from the wet weather and the Mule defense, and the Mule offense unleashed a balanced running and passing attack that moved the ball on the visitors. "It was huge," Mule Coach Eric Hansen said of the victory. "It's nice when everyone does their assignments." Winlock looked like they would be in the driver's seat as they picked up big yards on...

  • Candidates night at Skamokawa Grange

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

FALL IS HERE--The leaves are falling, the rains seem to visit us on more days than the sun and our days turn into nights before eight p.m. these days, so I'm thinking, Summer is definitely over and Fall is here! However, the weatherman said we may get a few warm days this week, so maybe we'll get our webbed feet dried out one more time before this year comes to an end. By the way, when we get these misty, foggy and darker days, it's best to get those head lights on early so that others can see you much more easily. Defensive driving is a real...

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners reviewed water rights applications, talks with the town, and their disconnect policy at their meeting on September 21. Manager Dave Tramblie recalled the board’s request at the last meeting that he contact Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz to discuss ways to partner on similar activities, such as the town contracting with the PUD for water meter reading or billing services. Tramblie reported that he had spoken with the mayor but clarified that he had no specific details to offer and needed clear directions from the co...

  • Nelson Creek project generates debate

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

Local officials and landowners will closely monitor water levels and flood drainage this winter on land lying along SR 4 and across the road from the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the Columbia White-tailed Deer. Columbia Land Trust has purchased the land, known as the Oller Farm, and has started work to restore wetland habitat. Last week, Maurice Mooers, a member of the board of commissioners of Diking District No. 3, which includes the property, told county commissioners he and neighboring land owners hadn't been informed...

  • County sharing capital improvement funds

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

Wahkiakum County officials are on track to approve as much as $200,000 in capital improvements to infrastructure in Wahkiakum County in 2011. The county adopted a resolution in 2004 that place a tax of .25 of a percent on real estate sales, and the fund has grown to $750,000, Treasurer Paula Holloway said Tuesday. The ordinance creating the fund limits its use to infrastructure and capital projects, but it may be shared among county government and junior taxing districts. This year, commissioners established a committee, headed by Commissioner...

  • Council wrestles with budget crunch

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz has ordered a selective spending freeze in response to an anticipated budget shortfall for 2010, and some department heads aren't happy. Wehrfritz said Monday it appears the town's general fund will be about $41,000 short of its expected revenue for 2010 because of declines in sales tax receipts and other taxes which are suffering in the national recession. The town's sewer and water departments, with revenues based on usage fees, however, are doing fine. In other business Monday, the council asked the planning...

With the arrival of the rainy season--today (Thursday) is the first day of autumn--Wahkiakuam County commissioners decided there is no hurry to develop a controversial biosolids ordinance. Evergreen Sanitation of Seaview has applied for a state Department of Ecology permit to dispose septage biosolids, the least treated class, on Phil and Sulema Zerr's Elk Mountain Ranch in Grays River, and there has been adverse public reaction to the proposal. After taking public input, commissioners asked Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow to develop an ordina...
