I think that ever since I was sick, I've been behind and cannot seem to get caught up on all the things I know that need doing before our rains come and don't leave. To top it all off, Autumn officially starts this Saturday, so say farewell to Summer. Let's hope for an Indian Summer and I'd say from the little heat wave of last weekend, we're headed in...

Elk displaying symptoms of hoof disease are becoming more common in southwest Washington, and wildlife managers are seeking information from the public in order to understand why. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) held a public meeting on Monday night in Longview to present known information about the condition. Approximately 60 people were in attendance. WDFW received sporadic reports about elk with lameness and/or overgrown/missing hooves beginning over a decade ago, but the number of reports has increased dramatically in...

As we wrap up summer, I will review some of the events our Grange was part of. In addition, I will recognize key people who made these events a success. Grays River Grange hosted this year’s salmon dinner at the Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle. Nearly 200 dinners were purchased. Thanks to all who participated in this fund raiser for the Grange. We have been invited back to prepare the dinner for the 2014 Finn Festival. There were many comments on what an excellent dinner the Grange prepared. The salmon was superb, Scandinavian p...
Fewer students are attending Wahkiakum schools this fall compared to last school year, school board members heard at a Tuesday night meeting. Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Bob Garrett explained that he had based this year’s budget on an enrollment of 432 for this fall. That figure came from class sizes at the end of last school year and an estimate of 30 kindergarteners. However, this month’s enrollment is only 403.4 full time equivalent (FTE) students. Garrett noted different factors contributed to the decrease: Some families hav...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday agreed unanimously to use the latest design for a new county ferry. Commissioners have been studying whether to use the new, updated design capable of handling large trucks or go back to an original design that is less expensive but wouldn't handle the larger vehicles. Commissioners have been concerned that the extra cost of the new design, which includes modifications to the shape of the ferry's hull and loading ramps, would severely limit County Road Department funds for regular or emergency...

I was thrilled at this response, but I shouldn't have been surprised: SJFC is extraordinary. For 27 years, now, SJFC has been providing a safe place for children to learn, stay, and grow.My own children, now...

Visitors and friends attending the fair had a wonderful group of people to welcome them through our Wahkiakum County Fair gates. Our admission booths were staffed with some of the nicest people from our local area. I heard some comments back about being a ticket taker last August and they were all good! Maybe it was the little bag of treats Valle or Azery took to the workers about half way through their shifts. Maybe it was knowing they were needed and a big part of helping with fair time volunteer activities. We cannot thank them enough for...
