    September 20, 2007 Celebrate the "Spirit of the River" with a festive evening of music, dance, spoken word, and art on Saturday at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Astoria. The evening is a benefit for Columbia Riverkeeper and the opposition to liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the Columbia River.     The Napavine Tigers made their plays in the fourth quarter and snatched a 28-14 Central League football win over the Wahkiakum Mules last Friday at Wahkiakum High School. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied 14-14. Then the Tigers made the plays they needed and the Mules misfired on the plays they needed.     Columbia Estuary Environmental Education Program (CEEEP) students presented their summer project on destroying the Japanese Knotweed that has taken over much of the Birnie Creek area. The presentation came last Thursday at the first meeting after summer break of the Wahkiakum Stakeholders. For 16 days at three hours per day, the students used guns to inject Glyphosate, a chemical used to destroy the weed and which has no risk to humans and is one of the most common herbicides, the students said.     Faced with petitions signed by 86 Cathlamet residents calling for an end to the emergency siren on City Hall, the Cathlamet Town Council on Monday voted 3-2 to silence the siren while a committee considers alternatives to call to alert emergency responders. Petitioners said that they feel the siren was very disturbing and that they think the fire department could find suitable alternatives with modern technology.     The Wahkiakum PUD and administrators discussed vehicle improvement and other issues in the bi-monthly Tuesday morning meeting. Questions arose regarding possible towing for disabled PUD vehicles and whether or not towing is included in the already existing insurance package. Commissioners indicated it would be looked into. The administration questioned whether or not a consultant was required for installation of new software for PUD employee computers.     The major components of the new Cathlamet Fire House have been completed, Assistant Fire Chief Fred Johnson told The Eagle on Tuesday. “We’re excited! And we are very grateful to Jerry and Linda DeBriae and to all the other donors.” Johnson said. Firemen plan to move in equipment at the end of September.     September 20, 2007 The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team picked up non-league victories over Warrenton last Thursday and Stevenson on Monday. The Mules swept Stevenson in three games, winning 25-23, 29-27, 25-20. “The girls played phenomenal defense; they kept Stevenson off balance the whole time,” said Mule Coach Patty Anderson.     Hancock Forest Management and DeBriae Logging were able to move a steel railroad bridge away from the Elochoman River on Tuesday. Last winter’s floods eroded the bridge’s footings, and it had slipped several feet toward the river. Local residents felt the bridge clogged the river channel during high water and caused flooding.     Owners of old barns in Washington can receive financial aid for repairing and maintaining them by joining the Washington State Heritage Barn registry. The October 1 registration deadline is fast approaching, according to Paula Holloway, Washington State Heritage Barn Initiative Steering Committee Member. Holloway said there are about 100 barns of historic relevance in Wahkiakum County alone.
