On September 11, the Wildlife Center of the North Coast released 22 white pelicans at Vista Park in Skamokawa. The white pelicans were admitted to the center as starving chicks, unable to fly or feed themselves. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday heard the latest update in staffing at the Cowlitz Family Health Center clinic in Cathlamet and handled other business, including a discussion of the county's comprehensive plan. I was troubled, however, by the third caption which read, “Fishery managers hope the seines will be less lethal to endangered wild salmon than gillnets.” The implication here seems to be that there exists a conservation issue with gillnets. Washington’s Department of Natural Resources invites the public to review the new draft Aquatic Lands Habitat Conservation Plan. Lifelong Rosburg resident Norman Elmer Anderson, 98, died in Forks, Wash., Aug. 23, 2014, a mere four days short of his 99th birthday. Norman was born in Astoria, Aug. 27, 1915, after his mother took a boat across the Columbia River, staying with a friend in Astoria, awaiting his arrival. David Terrill Curl died at his Naselle residence on September 8, 2014 at the age of 55. He was a surfer, welder, teacher, blacksmith, artist, draftsman and commercial fisherman.
