Kim Eaton, coach for the Naselle team, said that the Comettes had their first game a few days earlier and were used to a slower tempo game. “We’ve got to learn to switch up the tempo,” Eaton...

  • Mule roll over Winlock, head to Adna this Friday

    Sep 18, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule varsity ran just 30 plays in rolling up a 41-0 Central League win over the visiting Winlock Cardinals last Friday. The varsity took advantage of big plays and Cardinal mistakes to lead 34-0 at halftime. Winlock's second half kickoff went to Nathan Cothren, and he ran the ball back 75 yards for a touchdown, and Gunnar Blix's conversion kick made the score 41-0. At that point, Mule Coach Eric Hansen put in the junior varsity, and they finished the game. Mason Mackey put the...

  • Mules are off to a good start to season

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

MIXED BAG--Well, this past week we've certainly had a variety of weather and some of it was great. Then came Sunday! Wow, that was quite an impressive thunder event we had and if you add a touch of lightning and a brief power outage, along with some heavy rains, it made for quite an interesting day! Looks like we're in for some cooler weather with fairly moderate temperatures for most of this week, except for Thursday (today), when temperatures are back in the summer time range. I guess we may need to keep the fans and AC units going just a...

  • Town offers Port 1 lead role in development of surplus sewage lagoons

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

Cathlamet Town Council Member Dick Swart, standing in for Mayor Wehrfritz, who had a scheduling conflict, last Thursday presented commissioners of Port District 1 an opportunity to take the lead in the development of the lagoon, the current site of the city sewer ponds. Swart spoke of the many years of work that has gone into relocating the town’s wastewater treatment facility away from the waterfront so that “this precious resource can be used for something more up to date and for the bet...

  • Town offers PUD a compromise for water contract

    Sep 18, 2013

The Cathlamet Town Council is offering a proposed compromise to Wahkiakum PUD to resolve their dispute over the contract to provide water to the Puget Island Water System. Town officials feel the contract doesn't include costs for system expansion and water loss, and PUD officials haven't agreed to pick up a share of those costs, which, in the future, would include upgrades to the water plant's raw water intake and the implementation of a second source of water for the town's water system. At their meeting in July, council members agreed that...

  • PUD commissioners discuss water pact, other issues

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

Commissioner Eugene Healy addressed the termination of Wahkiakum PUD's current water contract with the Town of Cathlamet in 2037 during Tuesday’s PUD commissioner meeting. “I came away with the idea, ”Healy said, “that we all agree that currently the contract that we have is satisfactory to both parties, we may not like the contract, either side, but it is being administered properly and legally." Speaking to the commissioners’ desire to move forward, Robert Jungers said, “For a specific ta...

  • Port 2 commission outlines future projects

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 returned to work on updating their six-year comprehensive plan and acted on other business at their monthly meeting Tuesday in Skamokawa. The commission hopes to gather input from citizens around the district about what projects and services the port district should include in the updated plan. Planning consultant Brian Perleberg presented an updated list of questions to go to the public. He had prepared another late list last spring, and Port Manager Janet Bryan used that earlier list to collect data from...

  • Land acquisition proposal draws commissioners' concern

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

Wahkiakum County residents and public officials this week expressed reservations about a potential governmental acquisition of bottom land in the Skamokawa valleys. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has proposed purchasing up to 205.8 acres north of Skamokawa through a US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Coastal Wetland Conservation grant, with a match from the Wahkiakum Conservation District. In the past five years, the conservation district has received $771,000 worth of funding from the Salmon Recovery Board to address...

  • County awards bid for new ferry

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

With concerns over funding laid to rest, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday accepted a bid to construct a new ferry. Commissioners accepted the bid of Ice Floe LLC, doing business as Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders in the amount of $5.68 million. The bid was higher than predicted, and when added to other costs needed to prepare the Puget Island landing for the new, larger ferry, the county faced a $1.1 million cost over run. To address that problem, county officials contacted funding agencies and were successful in finding increased...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

The Cathlamet Town Council expects no action on an agreement with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) when it reconvenes its recessed Monday meeting later this week. The council needed to meet at the end of the week to award a contract for painting of the refurbished library building, and council members also agreed to delay action on the agreement so that they could have a clean copy of the agreement to sign; the draft presented at the Monday regular meeting had proposed changes from town Attorney Heidi Heywood. Aaron...

  • Undersheriff supports current leadership

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: I have written and rewritten letters to the editor towards the issue of the current campaign and have torn them up without sending. I came to the sheriff's office at the start of this year from King County. My reason in doing this had nothing to do with pay, I took a huge pay cut to make this happen. I saw a community that was really hurting and I wanted to help. If the voters don't choose to re-elect Howie then I will be retiring. I have no regrets about making the move. I have grown to deeply love this community and the people...

  • Sheriff Mark Howie is a proven leader

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: I grew up in Cowlitz County, not Wahkiakum. Like many others, I left home to pursue an education and a successful career. Later in life, my husband and I were able to return to our roots. After living in Portland, Wahkiakum County seemed like "Mayberry" (the l960's era Andy Griffith show) where the sheriff solves problems by drinking coffee with the folks and riding around in the car with the "bubble light" on top. I wish it were so but we're several decades past that type of law enforcement. We'd be naive or stupid to think we do...

  • Questions for the sheriff candidates

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: There is great interest in the race for sheriff. America is a land of laws, and a sheriff has the job of upholding our laws. Not always easy, and yes, a job-skill that requires a great deal of responsibility and discretion. But I ask; what if the judicial system above the sheriff makes their own laws and these office holders lack responsibility and discretion? There are two candidates for sheriff and this is good. Since both candidates have agreed to a public discussion, I plan to be there but state my questions now and will liste...

  • Former resident would vote for Mike Balch

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: While attending the recent Wahkiakum County Fair, I had the opportunity to meet Sheriff Mark Howie. A very nice guy, and I’m sure, a competent law enforcement officer. But, I have to say that I was very pleased when I learned that Deputy Mike Balch was running for the office of Wahkiakum County Sheriff. I have known Mike for 20+ years. Of all the present officers with the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office, I would think Mike would be far and away the top candidate for this post. Over 16 years ago, a tragedy occurred in our family...

  • Dikes and farmers--please get involved

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: Most dikes in the area were created by farmers to have more grazing, hay and so on. As the years have gone by, more and more of these farms are now owned by people simply living behind those dikes. I am one of those people. I have a fairly short piece of dike, and am co-owner of a tide-gate. I had cat work done to strengthen the dike from the inside. I replaced the tide-gate, upgrading to a fish friendly aluminum gate. I keep trees from growing on it as well. I, along with Grays River Habitat Enhancement District, our...

  • Cowlitz County Sheriff endorses Mark Howie

    Sep 18, 2013

To The Eagle: Over the past couple of years it has been my pleasure to get to know your sheriff, Mark Howie. As the sheriff of Cowlitz County, I had several discussions with the late Jon Dearmore regarding whom he intended to appoint as his undersheriff. For a variety of reasons, he decided to bring in someone from an agency outside of the area, but who was a man who was making a home in Cathlamet. He was a man Jon trusted, a friend; he was Mark Howie. On that black day last October when Jon chose to move on from this world, I had the opportuni...

  • Grays River pastor moving to Castle Rock congregation

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 18, 2013

Fall seems to be in the air, at least in the morning hours. Night temperatures have been comfortable, though. Guess it’s time to make plans for the rainy season once again. It will be nice to watch the leaves begin to turn and fall. Actually, this is my favorite season of the year. Naselle news Sports calendar for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Comets: Thursday, the 19th-volleyball with Valley in Naselle at 5:45 p.m.; Friday, the 20th-football at North Beach at 7 p.m.; Saturday, the 21st-cross country at Camp Rilea at 8 a.m., tourney v...

  • Island man generous with gaden produce

    Dennis Gordon|Sep 18, 2013

A dedicated and helping hand, and more, to the community is Bob Adams, Puget Island. Bob had the idea and commitment that he would use his time and gardening skills to help the less fortunate in Wahkiakum County. Bob started early this spring in growing a large number of vegetable plants from seeds. In fact, when it came time to transfer these seedlings, there were too many. So Bob did another gracious gesture; he gave many plant starts away. Since about the first of July, his efforts in producing a large vegetable crop have come to fruition....
