The Wahkiakum Mule football team will hit the road and head to Mossyrock this Friday to open the 2013 football season. Mule head Coach Eric Hansen said this week that 27 players are turning out for the team this year. "I like them," Hansen said Monday. With 12 seniors on the team, the Mules will have experienced players in most positions on offense and defense. "But after that, some juniors will have to step up," Hansen said. The offensive backfield is the team's strong suit, Hansen said. Mason Mackey and Austin Good will line up as fullback...

CHANGING--As Labor Day week began, we had a super nice day on Sunday, if you like it hot and sticky. There was a lot of sunshine, which made it a bit warm for me, but it was great for all those who had gone camping and enjoying the outdoors and of course, the BBQ folks were not threatened by any rain. On Monday however, we began with clouds and light sprinkles in West Valley, so a big difference between the two days, although it did wind up clearing up and wasn't too bad by Monday afternoon. If you were up late Monday night or early Tuesday...

Commissioners of Wahkiakum PUD returned this week to discuss the Town of Cathlamet’s recent plans to terminate the current water contract in 2037 if the Town’s demands for increased compensation could not be met. “The letter didn’t just say they planned to terminate the contract," Commissioner Dennis Reid said. “They said if favorable negotiations do not occur, the town cannot continue to supply water to the Puget Island Water System (PIWS) beyond the contract termination date, so that’s di...
Public health issues were a major focus of the weekly meeting Tuesday of the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners. Discussion ranged from staffing at the Cowlitz Family Health Center office in Cathlamet to how to handle exposures to bats. Health center Executive Director Dian Cooper reported the center is trying to recruit a nurse practitioner to carry some of the load at the Cathlamet clinic while recruiting continues for a full-time physician to replace Dr. David Steves, who left earlier this year to return to his native Pennsylvania,...

On Saturday, six teams competed in the annual Buzzard’s Breath Chili Cook-off, an event sponsored by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. A crowd filed under the tent top to taste chili and to flee the heat of the sun. There were a couple vendors there to take advantage of the festive mood, and Drop Anchor Brewery provided beverages. Jake Cullins and Ginger Schmitz of Jack and Jill Catering were judged on two fronts, having also entered the national Tolbert contest with their basic meat and gravy...
To The Eagle: Some people call us outsiders. Mark and I came to Wahkiakum eight years ago when we bought a small cottage. My mother in law lives here and we made this our second home. Whenever we drove into Cathlamet, I knew we would live the rest of our days here. We came from a city with high crime, gangs, drugs, and prostitution. After a weekend ended, and we had to go back to Seatac, we hated leaving. The only thing calling us back was Mark's job and family--our two daughters, grandsons, my mom, dad, and aunt. When Jon Dearmore called Mark...
To The Eagle: “Longmire” is a television series on the A&E channel which focuses on a Wyoming sheriff whose jurisdiction is the fictional county of Absaroka. Recently, one of the ongoing stories has revolved around the campaign race for the position of county sheriff. The two contestants for the position are Longmire, the sheriff, and Branch Connally, a deputy on the force. Like “Longmire,” the current contestants for the position of Wahkiakum county sheriff are Mark Howie, the sheriff, and Mike Balch, a deputy on the force. Like “Longmi...
To The Eagle: I had the opportunity to get to work with Detective Mike Balch for 11 years. During that time I got to know Mike personally as well as professionally. As a person, Mike is truly devoted to his family. Mike’s love and devotion to Darlene, Christopher and Jonathan was unquestioned and unequalled. Mike was also devoted to his church family as well. While I did not attend the same church, I knew Mike was either playing music, teaching Sunday school, or serving on a board. Professionally, Mike was one of my training officers. I l...
This has really been a summer to remember. Hardly any rain, not too terribly hot, even though it has been pretty muggy. Actually I miss the rain and the green. So much of our grass and vegetation is turning that dead brown color that I hated in California. News from Naselle The 2013-2014 school year is officially underway. Kids are back in class, football and volleyball are the sports to follow, and an early morning chill will be in the air soon. Sports calendar for this week includes: Friday, the 6th-football at Rainier at 7 p.m.; Monday, the...
