  • Mule volleyball team filling some big shoes

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 3, 2009

The Wahkiakum Mule team is trying to fill some big shoes. Graduation last June took the leading hitters and an all-league setter. Retirement took a coach with college experience and success at Wahkiakum, Patty Anderson. Long-time assistant Coach Jeff Rooklidge has stepped into the head coach role. "No one applied for the head coaching job when we posted it," he said. "I wanted to stay as JV coach, but I decided to move up. I won't be able to fill Patty's shoes. It's a daunting task, but she taught me a lot. Former head Coach Joyce Wilson also c...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 3, 2009

After 12 months of planning and preparation I must admit that I’m relieved but also sad that our 101st fair celebration has ended. It’s been a challenging year but we’ve worked hard and are proud to show off the new fairgrounds arena. Yes, having power and doors would have made things easier but life would be boring if everything always went to plan. Mother Nature’s been keeping us on our toes the last few years but we’ve managed to make the best out of every situation. Now is the time to look towards the future and how we can work together...

  • Pikeminnows

    Stevan Morgain|Sep 3, 2009

Some guys have all the luck. At least that’s Bruce Oliver’s take on the fact that during the months of June and July of this year he caught four tagged northern pikeminnows near the Cathlamet Marina and Elochoman River. The fish were worth $500 each. “I got $2000 for the four of them,” said Oliver. “That’s a pretty fair chunk of change for a guy just having fun.” Oliver lives in Arizona but spent many years in Longview. That's how he learned of the Cathlamet marina. He currently keeps a little motorhome at the marina and fishes the Columbia. “I...

  • Longboards prove a big hit

    Stevan Morgain|Sep 3, 2009

See videos of the longboarders here Leather ripped apart and rubber-soled shoes screeched across the pavement in downtown Cathlamet Saturday and Sunday when internationally sanctioned longboard racers took over the town and slid, crawled and dodged their way down the town's steep streets. The two-day professional longboard competition began calmly enough on Saturday at the Stockhouse Farm on Puget Island. The sedate, long and lonely distance skaters didn’t really prepare the few spectators that hung out at the finish line for what was in s...

    Sep 3, 2009

The Helping Hand food bank will apparently close at the end of September, coordinator Rick Dasher announced this week. The Helping Hand food bank is run by a private, non-profit corporation. It has been housed in the Cathlamet Seventh Day Adventist Church for 15 years but is not operated by the church. However, the church can no longer house Helping Hand, church attorney Herold Follet, general counsel for the Seventh Day Adventist Church, said Tuesday. "The Cathlamet Seventh-day Adventist Church has made the decision to discontinue its...

Local officials and administrators of the Cowlitz Family Health Center will begin talks leading to a transition of ownership of the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic from the county to the health center. Commissioner Lisa Marsyla reported on the scope of coming discussions to colleagues Dan Cothren and Blair Brady on Tuesday. Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 3, 2009

Wahkiakum County commissioners and the county's two judges are at odds over funding for a bailiff position. Superior Court Judge Michael Sullivan and District Court Judge Bill Faubion have been awarded state funds for a bailiff and some court security equipment. The judges asked, in writing, that the commissioers sign a contract on Tuesday that would have employed retired Deputy Sheriff Hans York as the bailiff. Commissioners, however, declined to sign the contract. "I just about flipped out when I read the hold harmless paragraph," said board...
