  • Fairgoers enjoy entries, entertainment

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 27, 2015

Attendance was down a little this year at the Wahkiakum County Fair, though Fair Manager Patricia Dursteler did not know the exact numbers on Tuesday. Despite that, the people who did attend had a good time. "It was a blast," Dursteler said. "We had so much fun." Fear that the Downhill Corral in Cathlamet would keep people away seemed unfounded as local turnout for the skateboarding event seemed to be low as well. Dursteler wasn't sure if it was the detour or the annual kite festival in Long Bea...

On August 17, Judge Michael Sullivan sentenced Puget Island resident Donna L. Buck, 55, had been a bookkeeper for Elochoman Valley Partners, LLC, a self sustaining company managed by Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services, according to court documents. EVP provides services around the...

  • Ferry service resumes after glitches are found

    Rick Nelson|Aug 27, 2015

The ferry "Oscar B." resumed service Wednesday morning instead of being closed all week. That's the good news. The bad news is that the contractor will have to return once design and fabrication issues are settled. On Monday, an inspector noted that the ramp extension which the contractor had planned to weld on site needed to be fabricated in a shop for highest quality welding. Workers from Legacy Contracting, Inc., also noted that, because of the design, only a small portion of the extension, which is supposed to distribute weight and improve...

  • Riders compete for Silver Buckle prize

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 27, 2015

Ginger Moonen and other volunteers, along with support from Wahkiakum County Fair Manager Patricia Dursteler, are bringing back a riding event, the Silver Buckle Series. There were three opportunities to compete this year and there are plans to have six competitions next year, three during the winter and three more in the summer. Several local sponsors stepped up to provide prizes. Sam Longtain donated eight loads of dirt for the arena. "We couldn't have put the show on without them," Moonen...

  • Children's summer reading program at library ends

    Aug 27, 2015

Children at Cathlamet Public Library have enjoyed finding out about assorted heroes this summer, at the Every Hero Has a Story-themed collaborative summer library program. Hero types included: historic, children, tall tale, mythological, community (fire, police and military veteran), animal, and superheroes with their sidekicks. Activities at the programs included stories, crafts, games, and a “superhero training camp” where children made costumes, lifted a huge “weight,” “flew” and crawled through a “laser field.” The programs concluded with...

  • Street vacation vote took the low road

    Aug 27, 2015
    1

To The Eagle: Cathlamet’s latest land giveaway was a predictable mistake. It followed a pattern of one-way gifting that in recent years has included a parking lot for Port District 1’s cabins, a big sewer rate discount for the marina, free plans for streetlight placement (paid for by the Town’s 2010 grant to re-illuminate Main Street) and now free land gained by vacating Beal Street to be used for unspecified “economic development” on the waterfront – most likely a parking lot for the brewery. The main architect of these transfers: David Goodr...

  • Scheduling overlap presents issues

    Aug 27, 2015

To The Eagle: What a shame that two very popular community events had to be scheduled for the same weekend. The county fair is a long standing tradition with events and entertainment for all ages, especially youth and 4-H. These youth are learning and exhibiting skills that will serve them well in the future. (Without farmers we would all starve). The skateboard competitions have also become a popular spectator event bringing a lot of visitors to the area. The problem is that this county does not have enough people to support two events at a ti...

  • Detour seems to be problematic

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 27, 2015

MIXED BAG--This past week has brought us a mixture of weather, with the least favorite being the smoke that descended upon us on Saturday. It almost seemed hard to believe that the smoke we were getting was from so far away, as it smelled like "fresh" smoke. Needless to say, I was happy that it wasn't close by, but I also realized if we were experiencing headaches, clogged noses and burning eyes clear over here, what were those poor folks going through over there where the fires originated? Thankfully, the winds picked up on Sunday evening and...

  • Community garden shows robust growth

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 27, 2015

The Community Garden in Cathlamet's Erickson Park has grown robust thanks to hard work, long hours and the expertise of several local master gardeners, volunteers and even the occasional hand from local inmates on work release. It's so lush this year, it was added to the Cathlamet Woman's Club Tour of Homes and Gardens on August 8. The master gardeners have been trying to improve the soil since the garden was established in 2010 and it is finally starting to pay off. Towering sunflowers grow...

  • USFWS seeks comments on determination for murrelet habitat

    Aug 27, 2015

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking public comment on a proposed rule reevaluating the designation of critical habitat for the marbled murrelet. The Service is not proposing any changes to critical habitat. The marbled murrelet is a small, robin-sized diving seabird that spends the majority of its time on the ocean resting and feeding, but flies inland to nest in old growth forests. The Washington, Oregon and California population of marbled murrelet was federally listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in...

  • Going downhill fast and hard

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 27, 2015

The crowds were lean, the weather was comfortable, and the competition was hot at the 2015 Downhill Corral this weekend. An easterly wind blew in a smoky haze from Washington fires to fill the skies and darken the sun from orange to red. And still young men and women from near and far traveled to compete in an event that is becoming known throughout the world. "How is it in Cathlamet?" skateboarders are asked when they travel to Australia, Europe and New Zealand. "There are several...
