  • Locals appear in national magazine

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

DRIPPY BEGINNING--This work week is beginning a little damp, not making any hay-makers happy, but my lawn is probably thrilled as it was looking a little parched. The full week of dry weather that some forecasted fell apart as a weak system came in and gave us some heavy cloud cover Sunday evening and this light rain Monday morning. By Monday evening the drizzle turned into down right rain, and the clearing that I thought we'd have by Tuesday, certainly didn't show up here Tuesday morning either. It's another wet one I'm afraid. FAIR TIME--It...

Crouse replaced Scott Merriman, who left to work in the St. Helens IGA, which is close to his home. Crouse has worked in the Cathlamet store since 2004. She said she finds the work challenging and her goal is to give better service to her customers. “We have a really great team right now,” she said, of her 11 employees. Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized the closure of a portion of the eastbound lane of Steamboat Slough Road. The closure affects an area where the Columbia River is eroding the shoreline and undercutting the dike protecting the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge for the White-Tailed Deer. In other business, the board told Assessor Bill Coons they would wait till Coons and a commissioner meet with the Department of Revenue in September to discuss department priorities before acting on a request for transfer to his...

    Ruby Murray|Aug 25, 2011

“So, you’re the new DeEtta,” a customer said Tuesday as he slid into the barber chair at the Cathlamet Barber Shop. “I should probably look in the mirror so I can show you how DeEtta did it,” he said. The new barber, Christeena Bassi, said she is enjoying getting to know the customers who received haircuts from DeEtta Funderburg for a decade. At the end of June, Bassi, who is 30, completed the yearlong course of study for a cosmetology license, and has purchased the Cathlamet Barber Shop from Funderburg. The barbershop, a landmark on Main Stre...

  • Volunteer EMT proud of department

    Aug 25, 2011

To The Eagle: I am writing in response to the recent article regarding another allegation against the Cathlamet Fire Department by Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz. For over 20 years, I have been a volunteer EMT and have always been proud to serve in an organization responsible for saving lives and property in Wahkiakum County. Beyond the approximately 500 calls a year is a long list of state and federal requirements and continual maintenance to be ready at a moment's notice to go into action. Volunteers spend countless hours each month in trai...

  • Express concerns over PUD increases

    Aug 25, 2011

To The Eagle: As a ratepayer to the Wahkiakum PUD, are you aware that a rate increase from the Bonneville Power Administration of 9.5 percent would not require a 9.5 percent increase in a ratepayers electric bill? In actuality, BPA cost of power to the PUD constitutes approximately 50 percent of the cost of delivering power to the ratepayers. If the PUD's budget for the next calendar year maintains the same operating costs as the prior calendar year, the rate increase would 50 percent of 9.5 or 4.75 percent. If one was to go one step further...

  • What's Happening at the Fair? - August 25, 2011

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Aug 25, 2011

I hope that everyone had a chance to stop by and enjoy the 2011 Wahkiakum County Fair. We had a great line-up of music entertainment for each day plus magicians, reptile shows, line dancers and fencing demonstrations. There were a lot of animal and still life exhibits to look at, animal shows to attend and the weather was perfect. It was a wonderful Fair! As Fair Manager, of course I had a few “oh no, what do I do now?” times, one being the spelling bee. The person who was to conduct the spelling bee was told the wrong day. It was time for the...

  • Please observe guidelines for letters

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

Newspapers like to get letters to the editor. They represent the diverse points of view in our community, and they're often informative. Writers will take on public officials, who by the nature of their elected position, are subject to criticism that goes beyond the limits normally given to private citizens. This week, we received three letters on Tuesday, one past deadline, criticizing Mayor George Wehrfritz and his handling of Cathlamet Fire Department business. Specifically, writers focused on a grant the department solicited from the...

  • DNR crew's hard work benefits Johnson Park

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 25, 2011

I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields. It looks like more good weather on the way though, at least through the weekend. News from Naselle: One more week until school begins...
