  • Good time had by all at the fair

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

CLOUDY START--As this work week begins, it's pretty doggone cloudy out here in West Valley this morning, but it's not all that cold, so it's just right for this non-sun lover! It's pleasant enough to be outside in, but not hot and the wind's not blowing, so it's not nippy, so one of my personally preferred, perfect days! According to the weather folk, it seems the cloudy morning, sunny afternoon routine will continue throughout the week and they say there is no rain in the forecast, although it is certainly very dark out there this Tuesday...

  • Naselle woman missing, car found on bridge

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

When Astoria Police found the car at 3:24 a.m. on August 16, the keys were in the ignition and the emergency lights were flashing. The owner, Traci Wirkkala, however was nowhere in sight. Wirkkala, 41, grew up in Deep River and now resides in Naselle. She has not yet been located. The US Coast Guard provided a helicopter to search the area, and Wirkkala was entered into the National Crime Information Center. Additionally, an attempt to locate was issued to other agencies. Police found the vehicle in response to a dispatch that an abandoned car...

  • Grange discusses food bank facilities

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

Members of the Grays River Grange #124 congregated last week for their regular Tuesday meeting. Prior to the 7 p.m. meeting, grangers strolled through the double doors bearing delicately baked treats to share with their neighbors and friends. Following a dinner, dessert and coffee, members gathered in the main hall to commence an opening ceremony traditional to the farm-based fraternal organization. Perhaps unique to the Grays River Grange was the musical accompaniment of Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic playing the tune of the Rolling Stones classic...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

The Cathlamet town council authorized on Monday a call for bids for remodeling the town hall building and also passed resolutions closing streets and curtailing parking in this weekend's Cathlamet Downhill Corral longboard festival. With the council's approval, Mayor George Wehrfritz said the town would call for bids as soon as possible for the town hall project. He hopes to be able to open bids in mid-September, award the contract by the end of the month and have construction going by early October. If all goes well, the work could be done by...

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

Almost four decades ago a small group of local businessmen in Long Beach came together to create a bank that would focus on the community. The Bank of the Pacific, which has served generations of Wahkiakum County residents, has recently received FDIC approval for their application to open a new branch in Warrenton, Ore. With an anticipated opening set for June 2013, construction will begin this fall. “I am excited about the opportunities in Warrenton and look forward to serving the needs of both the Warrenton and Astoria communities,” said Ban...

  • Writer clarifies context of Thomas article

    Aug 23, 2012

To The Eagle: Although I did not interview for or know that an article was going to run about the August 12 fund raiser event for Brandi Thomas, I wanted to clear the record because many things that were said in the article were taken out of context. Some of the information came from an email that I sent to Ms. Lindquist who wrote the article. I know her on a personal level and know that she is one of the sweetest people I’ve met. I have taught in the same building as she did her student teaching and quite a bit of substitute teaching during t...

  • Who is really hogging the river?

    Aug 23, 2012

To The Eagle: Governor Kitzhaber has called for an end to commercial gillnet fishing. Hmm. I don't understand all the hullabaloo! I'm glad and thankful we have commercial gillnetters. I love to eat fish but I do not like to fish for it. For many years, I commuted to work from Cathlamet to Longview. From Nassa Point to county line I would see less than 10 gillnetters (I know there are more going toward Astoria). They are not out there every day or every night; they are out there only when allowed. Now, the sport fishermen, that's a different...

  • Spirit of volunteerism alive and well

    Aug 23, 2012

To The Eagle: Speaking of our community’s wonderful spirit of volunteerism, (August 16 ‘Opinion’) I would like to acknowledge the exceptional work done by volunteers on behalf of Cathlamet Public Library. Not only do they provide fine customer service checking-out nearly 12,000 books and movies every year, they also perform a wide variety of other tasks that keep the library running smoothly. Thanks to volunteer generosity, the library is now open Tuesday through Saturday, five afternoons a week. In addition, the library is governed by a board...

  • Kitzhaber plan needs to be stopped

    Aug 23, 2012

To The Eagle: The article that was in last week's Eagle speaking to the Governor Kitzhaber plan is related to a proposal that goes back several years when the State of Washington also tried to out the commercial fishermen put of business on the Columbia River. I've been a Grange member for over 60 years and was on the Fish and Wildlife committee at that time. When we were meeting with this group who were making the proposal which our committee opposed, I asked what percentage of the people in the state of Washington actually had a license to...

  • Initiative, plan would harm local fishers

    Aug 23, 2012

To The Eagle: Thanks very much for the stories regarding the Oregon Ballot Measure 81 and Governor Kitzhaber response, regarding gillnetting on the Columbia River. Both of these endeavors could cause great harm to our local fishermen here in Wahkiakum County and in Washington State. Gov. Kitzhaber is apparently not aware that the only Select Area for fishing on the Washington side is in Deep River and it is maxed out in terms of fish production and too limited in space to permit many fishermen. There have not proven to be any other places in Wa...

  • Good food and fun to be had at church BBQ

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 23, 2012

Thank you Mother Nature, we really are getting a summer. This weather is great, not too hot for too long and it even cools down at night. We had the pleasure of Steve and Linda Ramsay’s grandchildren coming over for a hot dog roast with s’mores and ice cream the other night after they went swimming in the Grays River near our house. Kids sure have a way of brightening the day. Thank you for the kid fix, Sarah, Skyler, Logan, Brandon and Brenton. Come back any time. Oh yes, glad to have Steve, Linda, Brandon and Amanda as well. News from Nas...
