  • The Fair

    Aug 22, 2019

There were a lot of happy young people at the Wahkiakum County Fair this year, including Genevieve Fleming, who raised enough money to be the 2019 Fair Queen, and the spelling bee winners who took home some cash, including Rex Stalcup, Moses Schell, Logan Wirkkala-Scheller, and Mylinh Schell. Kids were everywhere on Saturday, enjoying treats, chasing bubbles, and screaming with joy on the inflatables. Photos by Diana Zimmerman. See more photos at www.waheagle.com. • Commissioners vote 2-1 to dispose of the Johnson House

    Rick Nelson|Aug 22, 2019

In a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voted to dispose of an unused house on county property. In other business, commissioners raised the ceiling for contracting off the small works roster; Sheriff Mark Howie discussed the need for more evidence storage space, and they heard a request from Assessor Bill Coons to promote two employees. Commissioners have been debating what to do with the Johnson House, a 100-year old house on Cathlamet's River Street that formerly housed a county mental health program but is now not used. The...

The suspect was wearing a Wahkiakum High School hoodie, and driving a boxy SUV, color unknown. Pictures were obtained...

  • Council acts on agenda, financial, other issues

    Rick Nelson|Aug 22, 2019

The Cathlamet Town Council covered a lot of ground at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. The meeting was the last for Council Member Sue Cameron who is moving to Clark County. Sheriff Mark Howie reported officers are close to making arrests in a burglary last week of the Skamokawa Resort. The business had security cameras which captured images of the perpetrators, and Howie recommended all businesses install the cameras. Overall, crime is down in the county, Howie said. His department is now fully staffed, he said, adding that he has...

  • Public responds to parks and recreation survey

    Rick Nelson|Aug 22, 2019

Community activists have begun surveying Wahkiakum County residents about their likes and dislikes for potential parks and recreation facilities. Survey responses will go into development of a county parks and recreation plan. Ron Wright of the Wahkiakum Resource Action Plan (WRAP) workgroup said the effort arose after comments from the public at bi-partisan community meetings last winter. Following up, WRAP members learned that there is significant state grant funding for parks and recreation f...

  • Congratulations to Herrera-Buetler for budget vote

    Aug 22, 2019

To The Eagle: Our US Representative Jamie Herrera Beutler deserves praise for voting against H.R. 3877—the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019. This budget is projected to add $1.7 trillion to the national debt, which is already over $22.5 trillion and rising fast. Federal debt is now the largest it has ever been in the history of our country during peacetime and it should be noted that government debt is rising even while the economy is expanding. On this track, publicly held debt will hit 144% of GDP by 2049—what looks to be an all-time high. As...

  • If pigs fly, someone will shoot'em out of the sky

    Aug 22, 2019

To The Eagle: This nation, our culture and our communities are polluted by the stench of gun oil and cordite and the ominous crack of gunfire such as I’ve heard echoing from a ranch several acres away from us. That awful, staccato pop-pop-pop-popping of small arms fire, followed by the mechanical chattering rip of a much heavier weapon, announces dangerous and probably illegal doings beyond the distant misted hayfields. Such is my idyllic rural neighborhood which I share with strangers in rusty trucks parked in the middle of the road as they s...

  • Studies show knives kill more people than rifles

    Aug 22, 2019

To The Eagle: I am sure Mr Skemp believes what he says is true, and has the best intentions, but awareness of facts and knowledge of weapons soon show these things to be totally untrue. His statement “These semi-automatic weapons are not used for hunting, they are not appropriate for target shooting, they are designed to kill and maim humans. These guns are weapons of war, not sport.” Each part of this statement is vastly untrue. Semi-automatic rifles have been around since the early 1900s. Most were designed for hunting and or sport. The fol...

Ayesha Ahmed, who graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 2018 and now attends Lower Columbia College, was named to the Northwest Forensics Conference Division III All-Conference Team after her very first year as a student of debate. I really felt like I got to be myself. It was really nice, because for a l...

  • School starts soon, hope you're ready

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 22, 2019

LITTLE DAMP--As this work week begins, we are just a little damp in West Valley, which makes for a gloomy start to the day, but on the other hand, moisture for our parched lawn is deeply appreciated, and it settles the dust as well. However, it wasn't too long before we had sunshine again, so we didn't get a lot of moisture, just enough to make it muggy when the sun came out! From what I hear, the real rain was to hit on Wednesday and may even be a bit damp on Thursday but then it's supposed to dry up and warm up, so let's hope those with weeke...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Aug 22, 2019

Through the Fog of Time Part I Imagine yourself driving east on State Route 4, and as you cross the Grays River bridge just east of Shannon Road, when a sudden fog immerses the car and the car comes to a halt. You get out of the car and notice the fog beginning to clear just west of Fossil Creek Road on the west side of the KM Mountain. Instead of seeing the highway, you see the Saldern Logging camp busy as ever on the south side of where the highway was. You realize you have gone back to the...
