GOOD AND BAD--There is an old saying around here, that if you want to plan something outdoors, don't do it at fair time, as the odds are, it will rain! Sure enough, after about a month of dry weather, it rained pretty good last Thursday on the opening day of the fair, which was really too bad. While we needed the rain, the timing couldn't have been worse, but thankfully, the hearty still came to check out the fair and we certainly thank all those who did. As this week begins, we are sunny but extemely muggy. I'm sure those camping or traveling...

At the August school board meeting on Tuesday, discussion took a lively turn regarding the legislated $367 allotment for a mandated Highly Capable Program (HCP). Wahkiakum School District chose not to take part in the program for the last few years because of poor funding. This year, however, the legislature changed the language regarding HCP, and school districts can no longer opt out. Superintendent Bob Garrett conferred with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction regarding the...
County officials across the state are preparing to press their message to state officials: The current demands on county government aren't sustainable. Wahkiakum County officials discussed the issue Tuesday with Brian Enslow of the Washington State Association of Counties, a group which lobbies for counties in the legislature. The group, called WSAC, is more than that, said commission Chair Blair Brady, who is active in the organization. "When I introduce myself, I say I'm from the Washington Department of Counties," Brady said. "That gets thei...
The Cathlamet Town Council on Monday agreed to start in motion the process to stop providing water for Wahkiakum PUD's Puget Island Water System. The water contract for two entities doesn't expire until 2037, but council members agreed with Mayor George Wehrfritz that it might be prudent for the agencies to separate. That would mean the PUD would have to find another source of water for the PI Water System. Wehrfritz reported he and other town representatives have discussed the situation with PUD officials, who seem willing to consider finding...
On Saturday, August 17, Debi Richards, Longview resident and manager of the St. Helens Shopping Center, could not stop smiling. Patrick Carrico, an artist and Cathlamet resident, along with several volunteers, was hard at work on a mural that had been commissioned by the Cowlitz County Health Department and the shopping center for the west side of Richards’ building along 30th Avenue, a busy street in the low income neighborhood. Cars slowed and cameras flashed. People stopped to gawk and t...
In this country for the last century we've kinda been in the catbird seat to watch various forms of communism and socialism fail. Luckily our founding fathers were sold on a republican form of government with a free market capitalism. That's the system that built the nation we live in -- the wealthiest and most successful on the planet by a long shot -- until recently. Recently, we have drifted off into crony capitalism, which pretends to be the real deal, but actually is the government(s) picking winners and losers with an obnoxious...
While talking with a proponent of the junk vehicle ordinance that is being looked at for Wahkiakum County I was informed that logging, farming, fishing and recycling, to name a few types of businesses in the area, were all things of the past and that the only thing that can sustain this county financially is tourism. So we better get busy and make this county look pretty for the droves of tourists who will be coming to replace the income we have been feeding our families with for the past umpty years. It was interesting to me that this viewpoin...
I am completely confused regarding the actions being taken at the Hansen Wildlife Refuge. Supposedly there is a concern that the present road/dike will be breached by the Columbia River and there are no funds to fix it? Yet millions will be spent to build a new dike and road that does not go along the Columbia River. In addition they have removed many deer that lived in the refuge and in so doing killed about 25 percent of the ones they tried to move and now I learn that many of the moved deer have died as well bringing the total lost to over...
