  • Senator Cantwell hears local issues

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 20, 2015

Several local officials attended a roundtable discussion with Senator Maria Cantwell last Wednesday in Cathlamet. The senator listened carefully, taking notes as each person at the table took a turn to speak about the issues confronting their departments, whether it was infrastructure, tourism, a housing shortage or mental health issues. Port 1 Commissioner Bob Kizziar mentioned the eroding beaches on Puget Island and the need for dredging in the marina and elsewhere. "I remember that the Corps...

  • Anglers must release wild chinook at Buoy 10 fishery starting Aug. 24

Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife|Aug 20, 2015

Starting Monday, Aug. 24, anglers participating in the popular Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia River are required to release any chinook salmon with an intact adipose fin that strikes their lures. A new rule will limit the chinook salmon catch to abundant hatchery fish marked by a missing adipose fin. As before, coho salmon with an intact adipose fin must also be released on the same 16-mile stretch of the lower river. The action follows three weeks of soaring catch rates and high angler turnout that have rapidly propelled the chin...

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 20, 2015

A budget workshop was held at Tuesday’s Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting, as commissioners and managers tried to decide whether to move forward with or without a five percent rate increase in customer rates. General Manager Dave Tramblie continued to recommend a five percent increase across the board, for the electric system and both water systems. He itemized his reasons on paper. They were many and included, but were not limited to: • The BPA has increased their wholesale r...

  • Council prepares to act on water issues

    Rick Nelson|Aug 20, 2015

First the good news: The Town of Cathlamet's water plant is keeping reservoirs filled during this dry summer. Now the bad news: State water officials may be ready to limit the town and Puget Island Water systems to a maximum of 35 new connections. The issue touched off an explosive discussion at Monday's monthly council meeting, and after much discussion, the council authorized Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank to draft a request for proposals for engineering services to construct a new intake for the water plant on the Elochoman River....

  • County fair starts its 3-day run today

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 20, 2015

Things are picking up at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds this week. Volunteers are setting up and participants have been coming in with their entries. Some judging is already done. "We are paying premium points," Fairground Manager Patty Dursteler wanted to stress after a recent conversation about the matter with someone who was misinformed and frustrated. The youth barn has been painted. Paint and supplies were paid for with money raised from flea markets and last year's haunted house. Local...

  • Sense of community endangered by PUD

    Aug 20, 2015
    1

To The Eagle: The recent response by the PUD to Grays River residents Dave Henderson and Colleen Haley reminds me of a slightly risqué story – An attractive young lady was surprised by the amount of her bill when she was checking out of the hotel. When she asked why it was so high, the rather handsome desk clerk responded, “Well, we have a swimming pool and a sauna.” “But I didn’t use either of those,” the young lady said. “Ahh, but you could have,” replied the clerk. “We also have a very expensive fitness center,” continued the clerk....

  • DNR speaks to fire danger

    Aug 20, 2015

To The Eagle: As of August 11, there have been 751 fires on DNR-protected lands, with 628 of them caused by human activity. By this time last year, the state had seen 565 fires, with 455 of those human caused. To reduce that threat, DNR is looking to the public for help. Human-caused fires can be prevented if people take every precaution to not start a fire. People need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. If working with equipment in the yard, always be sure to have water available if a fire sparks. We can’t prevent l...

  • Skater offers appreciation

    Aug 20, 2015

To The Eagle: In light of the upcoming Cathlamet Downhill Corral this weekend, I want to say thank you to the people involved in raising money for the women's podium - not only for this year, but for last year as well. I've been attending and competing at the event on and off since 2011, and 2014 drew more women than ever out to race and even just to skate for fun. Encouraging women to come out and compete is so crucial for the development of the skateboarding community, and I appreciate that the residents of Cathlamet are so extremely...

    Rick Nelson|Aug 20, 2015

With Mayor Dale Jacobson providing the deciding vote, the Cathlamet Town Council adopted an ordinance to vacate a portion of Beal Street to Port District 1. Port officials requested the vacation of the undeveloped street last winter, saying they would use the property for economic development purposes. The vacation involves half of the street right-of-way between 2nd and 3rd streets, specifically, the half next to the River Mile 38 Brewery. In consideration, the port will allow the town to use a lot across from town hall on 2nd Street unless...

  • Ferry closing down for final ramp work

The ferry Oscar B. will be out of service next week as Legacy Conracting, Inc., finishes improvements to the Puget Island ramp. The ferry will go out of service Monday; the closure could last into Friday. The new nosing assembly will fit the new ferry and distribute weight better than the present ramp, which was designed to fit the old ferry, the Wahkiakum. County commissioners have approved Legacy's request to use the ferry as a work area for the project. "This would allow us to make sure the new nosing and the ferry have a good match and that...
