Port District #1 Commissioners are one step closer to securing funds to construct a 5,000 square foot small business incubator facility in Cathlamet. In late July, the state Department of Commerce announced the state’s Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB) had awarded a $210,000 20-year no interest loan and a grant of $40,000 to the port, a key supporting piece in the port’s grant application for $1.2 million in federal Economic Development Administration (EDA) money. A decision about the grant application is expected in October. The...

They say the third time is a charm. Employees and management of the Wahkiakum Fair hope so because they’ve worked hard to save their unique little fair. The fairgrounds experienced severe flooding in 2006 when water reached the six-foot mark on horse arena walls. In 2007 the water was almost as deep. But it was winter 2008 that almost put a period to the fairground’s history after Mother Nature buried the horse arena under three-feet of snow, and then crushed it to the ground. But like a Phoenix rising from the ashes again, and again, and aga...
It's not a definitive decision, but the Cathlamet Town Council authorized the town's consulting engineers to apply for federal grant funds to start the design of a new wastewater treatment plant. Town officials this spring pulled back from choosing a new plant over refurbishing the existing sewer lagoon plant because of the high cost. The project is estimated at $12 to $13 million, and with the current package of state and federal grants and financing, sewer system customers were looking at monthly rates of $100 or more to cover the town's...
The Wahkiakum County board of commissioners outlined the fundamental process they want to follow as they work with Cowlitz Family Health Center to change ownership of the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic. The health center board of directors agreed last week to pursue acquisition and operation of the family practice clinic. Commissioner Lisa Marsyla reported she would be forming a transition team to meet with health center officials to work out the details. Commissioner Blair Brady interrupted to tell Marsyla that the three commissioners need...

The Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department wants fairgoers to try out their “Beer Goggles” this year at the county fair. The goggles simulate driving under the influence and fairgoers will have an unusual challenge when they try on the goggles and then get behind the wheel to drive a go-cart. It's all part of their Fatal Vision program to let people instantly experience driving drunk, while being sober. “I know it sounds funny,” said Undersheriff Jon Dearmore, “but once people put these things on they realize why it’s dangerous to climb behin...
