  • Country Pride, County Wide!

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

LOOKING GOOD--This is it! Wahkiakum County Fair time and it starts today (Thursday) which is Senior Citizens Day until 4 p.m. From all weather reports I'm seeing, we should have some very nice weather for the fair; that would be great! It's also quite rare, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that it stays decent all week! For the first time, I'll be sitting in a booth inside the T-building, so it should be a fun experience. I'll be selling tickets for the beautiful coffee table made by John Gustafson. It's going to be given away on...

August 9--1:42 p.m. A Greenwood Road resident reported a theft. 5:54 p.m. A motorist complained that a mailbox was too close to the edge of West Birnie Slough Road and had caught a vehicle's mirror; an officer met with the home owner and found the box was 22 inches off the pavement. August 10--8:33 a.m. An...

  • PUD considering 9% rate increase

    Ruby Murray|Aug 18, 2011

Tuesday Wahkiakum Public Utility District General Manager Dave Tramblie recommended commissioners implement a 9 percent electrical rate increase beginning January 1. Tramblie presented a letter outlining his rationale, stating the request was taken as a last resort. He said the increase is the result of the PUD no longer receiving a $70,000 annual credit from Bonneville Power Administration, undertaking capital improvement projects like the construction of the new Wahkiakum substation for increased reliability, and a 9.6 percent increase in...

  • Port 2 considering Coffee Pot offer

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

Commissioners of Port District No. 2 of Wahkiakum County on Tuesday agreed to consider accepting a gift of real estate, Coffee Pot Island. The couple owning the island, which lies between Puget Island and the Wauna pulp mill, offered to donate the island to the port district in July. Commissioners Brian O'Connor and Kayrene Gilbertsen--Commissioner Carlton Appelo was delayed by road construction and missed the discussion--said they could see the island as an asset for the district. It lies across a channel from the district's Svensen Park Boat...

  • Mayor calls for suspensions, AGO investigation

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz has called for an investigation of a Cathlamet Fire Department mission. In July, Wehrfritz reported that members of the Cathlamet Volunteer Fire Fighters Association had applied in 2010 as a private business for a fire fighting contract with the US Forest Service and taken the department's wildlands unit to Prineville, Ore., for an inspection. They charged the fuel expense to the town's Emergency Services Fund (EMS), which covers ambulance expenses, not fire fighting expenses. At Monday's monthly meeting of the...

  • Getting ready for the fair, which starts today

    Ruby Murray|Aug 18, 2011

For 4-H families, August is a time of preparation and anticipation, culminating when the Wahkiakum County Fair opens on Thursday, August 18 (today). But volunteers work just as hard to make the fair grounds perfect. In the past three months, volunteers racked up over 1000 hours getting the fair ready for its first day today (Thursday), Fair Manager Becky Ledtke said. Last week, the T Building was ready, freshly washed gingham curtains in place, new paper, and bright colors welcoming visitors. Valle Ledtke was cutting out letters for signs. She...

  • For the love of steam

    Ruby Murray|Aug 18, 2011

Twenty-five years ago, Al Dunlop started drawing the plans for the steam sternwheeler, Cheng-tze. Stephen Morrison fell in love with steam engines in the north of England almost 40 years ago and bought the Linda J in 2002. Both members of the NW Steam Society travel many miles to visit with friends and share their boats—Dunlop comes from Spokane and Morrison from Tucson, Arizona. Morrison fell in love with steam engines in the early 1970’s. He was looking for good bike parts in the north of England for the bicycle shop he ran, when he s...

  • Dreaming of steam

    Ruby Murray|Aug 18, 2011

Got Steam? The Northwest Steam Society bumper sticker says it all. The group--home to a steam donkey, a calliope, remote controlled model steam boats, and vessels of all configurations--held its annual meet at the Elochoman Marina last weekend. The club has 275 members, most from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. The group rotates annual meets throughout the region. Lew Parsons of Hoodsport brought a larger than life steam donkey, permanently mounted to a lowboy trailer. It sat in the parking lot at the marina drawing loggers and others...

  • County to receive federal funds for a new ferry

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

Wahkiakum County should have a new ferry by the end of 2014. County Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported Tuesday that he learned from Senator Patty Murray's office that the county would receive a federal ferry boat discretionary grant of $2.8 million. The county is planning to replace the existing 11-car ferry with a ferry that will hold 23 vehicles, including large trucks with trailers. The estimated cost is $3.9 million. The county will get about $1.1 million in state funds, Ringen said, and that will take care of most of the expense...

  • Council okays ordinances, expenditures, 2nd Street plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

The Cathlamet Town Council approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the town's zoning laws on Monday, but council members had so many questions that it was suggested they bring in a consultant to handle the process. In other business at their monthly meeting: --The council met in an executive session called by Mayor George Wehrfritz to discuss potential litigation; --The council approved a parking and design plan for the 2nd Street renovation project; --The council discussed harvesting town timber to help cover the town's match for...

  • Commissioners OK Mill Road work in 2-1 vote

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners approved on Tuesday a permit allowing Columbia Land Trust to raise a portion of Mill Road. The land trust has purchased land between the road and Grays River and wants to remove a failing dike to turn the land into a wetland for juvenile salmon habitat. They would raise Mill Road to become a new dike. County Public Works Director Pete Ringen reported two weeks ago that he had placed conditions on the permit to ensure the dike and road would hold up, but the land trust was unable to post a bond to...

  • Property owners may appeal BOE valuations

    Aug 18, 2011

To The Eagle I want to make sure there is no confusion regarding the appeal rights of the Puget Island property owners relating to the new property valuations issued by the Board of Equalization. By now, all of the owners of property on Puget Island should have received their new property valuations issued by the county’s Board of Equalization. Regardless of whether an individual’s property valuation went up, down or stayed the same, property owners have the right to appeal that valuation to the Board of Equalization. If you are a Puget Isl...

  • Entire area has mounting problems

    Aug 18, 2011

To The Eagle: It appears that the "surge" is working. The shock troops that we sent to Washington D.C. last November to fight against President Obama's War on Prosperity managed to make some gains in the deficit and health care battles while keeping the tax monster under control. Not bad considering that our invading troops only nominally control one half of one of the three branches of the Empire. Most observers and tacticians agree that real significant gains will have to wait until next year when we can replace the chief executive and...

  • CLT permit approval sends wrong message

    Aug 18, 2011

To The Eagle: In last week's Eagle, Trudy Fredrickson submitted a letter entitled Land Trust Not Our Friend. She was commenting on the Kandoll Road CLT project where they finally succeeded in forcing landowner Raven Webb to sell her property. I was also sad to see Raven leave. But this is only the beginning. In a recent county commissioners meeting, Mr. Dan Friesz of Columbia Land Trust admitted he was wrong on an issue regarding CLT's Indian Jack Slough, formally known as the Nelson Creek project. In 2010, he said that the project would have...

  • Lindgren cabin still looking for volunteers

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 18, 2011

We enjoyed the week visiting with our nephew and niece from California. Didn’t get a whole lot done on the house but the hardwood flooring is just about ready to go down. Who knew that any moisture variance would make it impossible to install until the percentage was right. We didn’t. Hopefully readers will learn something from our experience, regarding hardwood floors in our moist area. When you spend lots of money to purchase the product, you don’t want it to buckle once it’s installed. We are very happy with the end result though, and onl...
