  • Citizens gather to protest against violence

    Aug 17, 2017

On Sunday evening in downtown Cathlamet, a group of citizens gathered in front of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse to peacefully protest Saturday's bigotry and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. They sang some songs and had a minute of silence for the people who had lost their lives that day. Here are some of their thoughts: "I'm really pleased with the turnout," Ursula Petralia, who organized the event, said. "We just want to live in peace with each other. I think that all of us want to...

  • Dredging, salary, other issues occupy county commission

    Rick Nelson|Aug 17, 2017

Wahkiakum County's board of commissioners on Tuesday addressed a wide variety of issues ranging from dredging and the county ferry to fish nets and mental health services. Commissioner Dan Cothren reported the county's permit application process for placement of dredge spoils is proceeding well; US Army Corps of Engineers staff have said they're pleased with the plans of the county staff and consulting engineers to complete the permitting. However, Cothren said, the pipeline dredge Oregon will soon be working on a shoal across from Cape Horn,...

  • PUD revisits Oneida water main extension

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 17, 2017

Wahkiakum County PUD commissioners heard a variety of reports at their meeting on Tuesday. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported that a crew, in preparation for a potential new customer, had replaced an old water line on the Westend after they found that it was composed of varying sized pipe and numerous fittings. Tramblie said that he purchased 1,000 more automated meter reading meters. He plans to have them installed in Cathlamet, on the east side of the county, in the Elochoman, and in...

  • Students flock to new chess club

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 17, 2017

Joel McEntire, who teaches science and language arts at John C. Thomas Middle School, is looking for some community members to join him in teaching, challenging, and just playing the game of chess with students in their club at school. When he started the Chess Club in the middle of the 2016-2017 school year, he had no inkling of the kind of turn out he would get. Fifteen students showed up. This year, 25 have already signed up, and school doesn't start until September 5. "I've known the rules...

  • White supremacy has no place in our nation

    Rick Nelson|Aug 17, 2017

So, our nation witnessed an ugly clash between white supremacists and counter demonstrators in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend. The clash left one demonstrator dead, and two police officers responding to the event died in a helicopter crash. I joined vigil Sunday afternoon in front of the courthouse to express sympathy with the victims and opposition to the racist, ultra-right values of the supremacists who initiated the demonstrations. Some 32 people were there, and they expressed grief, shock, disbelief and outrage that we have the...

  • It's more important to be human

    Aug 17, 2017

To The Eagle: I guess I'm confused about the issue surrounding removal of statues, flags, and everything removable from the public eye, because some are offended. Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't we been in the longest conflict in our history with no end in sight? This is against people that, among their other cultural issues that our society finds offensive, were destroying their historical artifacts because they were offensive to some. I just finished Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel titled, Uncle Tom's Cabin, which ignited a firestorm...

  • Take a moment and enjoy living here

    Aug 17, 2017

To The Eagle: I have been enjoying the back and forth letters over the past weeks. I am grateful to live here where everyone can have their own opinion and get it printed! We have so much to be grateful for here. I hope, in light of the rioting in Virginia, that we can all take a moment and just enjoy living here where we can share our ideas and thoughts and not hurt each other in the process. My greatest gift is my collection of neighbors. I am so blessed to have them, every one. We are a small county, yes, but we are strong in love,...

  • More reader participation is encouraged

    Aug 17, 2017

To the Eagle: There has been no end to the hectoring from our collectivist letter writers the past few months. Most of us in this county voted for @realDonaldTrump and it is sad that the minority here chooses to see us as racist, bigots and rubes. When half of the county's concerns can be dismissed with “Waving the bloody shirt” of the 20th Century, public discourse is stifled. Some have not rethought the European/Swedish utopian fantasy they absorbed in college and it sadly explains their “Fake Solutions” to problems in the 21st Century...

  • Port 1 commission considers future growth

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 17, 2017

Commissioner Bob Kizziar suggested that they schedule a workshop to discuss future port growth and goals, according to Port Manager Jackie Lea. A date has not been set. • Wahkiakum County Fair opens today at 9 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 17, 2017

COOLED DOWN--Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed the cloudier, cooler mornings before the sun came out in the afternoon as that meant things did not get so hot here as they have been inland, and that's fine by me. The heavy marine layer even gave us some damp roads a couple of days from the dew dripping off the trees and beings it's been so dry, even that amount of moisture was welcomed. However, by Saturday evening we were listening to real rain in West Valley and I was totally happy about that. As a matter of fact, I think I even heard my yard...

  • Successful blood drive gathers 41 units of blood

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 17, 2017

It has been an interesting week for me. I had a message on Facebook out of the blue from a cousin and his wife asking if I planned to be home the following day. We had probably not seen each other for 25 years, and they were on their way from California to Centralia to visit one of their sons. It was wonderful catching up for a few hours before they were off again with the promise of making this their summer destination now that they are retired. I had no idea they had family so close. Then my son, Carl and his girlfriend decided to come down f...

  • Robotics Club visits local fire department

    Aug 17, 2017

Firefighting can be a tough and dangerous job. Our community is made up of wonderful volunteers who come running when a call for help is made. The robotics club met with Chief Mike Beutler of Puget Island Fire District 1 last Friday evening. Technology such as oxygen level indicators on their air masks, TIC (thermal imaging camera) that helps them "see through the smoke" to find heat, and automatic pressure regulating on the truck's water system all help keep our volunteers safe and efficient...
