  • Lots of events this Fair weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

STILL HOT--Well, as this week begins and the weekend ends, it's still plenty toasty out there and I hope you are all being extremely careful about how much heat and sun you're taking in. Of course, it goes without saying that nobody should be left inside a car during these heat waves, as even with the windows down, there is no way a person or an animal can survive, so if you see someone's pet inside a vehicle or worse yet, a person, notify authorities immediately. If you have outdoor animals, make sure they have access to water and some shade...

  • Kitzhaber plan creates concerns

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber's proposal last week to address salmon allocation and related issues created some surprise and dismay on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Briefly, Kitzhaber proposed moving gillnetting into the select fishing areas such as Deep River and Young's Bay, giving recreational anglers a majority of run harvest allocations, and allowing the developing alternative gear fisheries on the mainstem of the river (see adjacent story for more detail). Local fishers fear the plan, if implemented, would have an adverse...

It is lined with single piece wainscoting that stretches from floor to ceiling. Shoes shuffle across old growth solid fir floors, pale scuff marks suggest many years of passage from the front doors to the kitchen area. Inside, volunteers from western Wahkiakum gather over a banquet. Neighbors share freshly baked bread, homemade quiche and a fluffy angel food cake...

  • Dessert benefits cancer patient

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

While she sat, propped by pillows, in a hospital bed Sunday evening, her friends and family were throwing Brandi (Knowles) Thomas, 35, a bash that she won’t soon forget. “She just had her third radical surgery last week,” explained Lisa Ridout, Brandi’s friend and event organizer. “She is very sore and hurting. They took skin from her thigh to graft it back to her chest area. She not only had her breast removed, but lymph nodes, some muscle and much of the tissue surrounding ribs, arm pit, side, etc. She will start chemo again (third time) as...

  • Commissioners to shop for insurance

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

The board voted to notify its liability and property insurer, the Washington Rural Counties Insurance Pool, on its intent to withdraw from the pool on August 31, 2013. The notice is required by the county's membership in the pool. The move allows the board to contact other carriers, such as the Washington Association of Counties (WASC), to compare rates and coverage. If the board finds no benefit to switching carriers, it can rescind the notice and maintain membership in the rural counties' pool. Commissioner Blair Brady supported the move and...

  • Sewer system plan hits a snag

    Aug 16, 2012

To The Eagle: At last we have a sequel to the fascinating, cliff-hanger Saga of the Sewer to Nowhere. The gravity-defying engineering project slated to be our greatest future tourist attraction, the Cathlamet Uphill Sewer System (CUSS), has hit a challenging snag. Attempting to burrow under SR4 on its journey up the mountainside, it ran into a large boulder, a totally unexpected phenomenon in this sandy, loamy valley. The powerful Bureau of Transport and Alchemy was able help initially by levitating bedrock up and down, but attempts to bypass...

  • Candidate gives thanks, endorses Prestegard

    Aug 16, 2012

To The Eagle: I would like to thank all Wahkiakum county residents for the opportunity to run for office in our wonderful little corner of the world. I also want to personally thank all who took the time to vote and to those who voted for me; it was an honor. I also want to thank the other three candidates who were in this campaign for county commissioner. In a world of nothing but negative campaigning, this county rose above it. I believe that's why we live here. Lastly, I would like to express my support for Greg Prestegard. I believe he...

  • Our great volunteers; unfeasible ferry design

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

First, we are reminded once again of all the wonderful volunteers we have in our region. This week, we'll enjoy the county fair, largely run by volunteers. Last Sunday, volunteers put together a fabulous fund raiser for a cancer victim. The weekend before, we had volunteers putting on festivals in Skamokawa and Naselle, and the weekend before that, Cathlamet's Bald Eagle Festival and a new festival at the Grays River Valley Center. Volunteers put on a couple forums for political candidates in July. The Grays River Grange held one of their...

  • Fund raising garage sale for Kenzie Saturday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 16, 2012

Have you had a chance to watch any of the meteor showers this week? With the clear skies most evenings, we have been enjoying a few sightings while sitting in the hot tub. What a relaxing way to spend the evening. I hope you have also taken advantage of the beautiful, warm weather this past week, but it looks like another weather alert for today with extremely warm temps. Remember to make sure your animals have lots of opportunity to get out of the heat and have access to fresh water. News from Naselle: I had an opportunity to try out the new...
