    One week to go and the fairgrounds are buzzing with activity. We’re all excited for this year’s 100th fair celebration and have been working flat out to make the fairgrounds shine.     The Cathlamet Town Council interviewed two applicants to fill a vacant seat on the council last night (Wednesday) after The Eagle had gone to press. Mayor Dick Swart said Tuesday that the council might appoint one of the persons to fill the vacancy; he had originally suggested the appointment be at the council's next regular meeting next Monday. The candidates are Ruth Doumit and former mayor and council member Bob Rendler. An artist, Doumit has lived and operated businesses of several kinds in Cathlamet for 35 years.     The Wahkiakum PUD met in a low key meeting to discuss vehicle and power issues. A reminder to all residents from KM Mountain to the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum County line, a scheduled power outage will take place on August 23 from midnight until 7 a.m. Sunday morning.     The 25th Annual National Night Out (NNO) brought approximately 50 people from all over Wahkiakum County to the fairgrounds in Skamokawa August 5. The usual protocol for NNO is community block parties, however, this year, organizers decided to take a different approach.     Longtime Skamokawa resident Arthur E. Peterson, age 80, died Monday evening in a car accident near Longview. Known as Skamokawa Pete, Petersonwas an icon in the community and was the propritor of the Duck Inn. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, Peterson was driving westbound near Milepost 53 east of Stella when his 1986 Chevrolet Blazer drifted across the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Express driven by Kurtis D. Sharon Dennis, who has been teaching there for at least 31 years, has decided to put away her protractor, at least for now.     Changes in salmon management practices will bring much change to Wahkiakum County starting this fall. The Elochoman Salmon Hatchery will be closed, and the Elochoman and Grays Rivers will become refuges for naturally spawning salmon.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a recommended hire and other moves designed to shore up the Wahkiakum Family Practice Clinic. The board approved a recommendation from clinic Business Manager Kathy Patterson to offer a position and negotiate a salary with a physician’s assistant formerly employed at a Seaside clinic which has closed.
