    The countdown has begun! Only one week left until our 101st fair celebration. The fairgrounds are buzzing with activity as three new buildings are being constructed to help house this year’s animal exhibits. This includes a new barn for the exotics as well as two other structures thanks to a donation of a Quonset by Grays River Grange member Krist Novoselic.     Plans for Cathlamet's first professional longboard racing weekend are coming together. The community will host longboarders from around the world August 28, 29 and 30. Veteran longboarders will present clinics on August 28 at Wahkiakum High School. Longboarders will compete in two races on August 29. At 9 a.m., they start a push race on Puget Island.     Port District 2 board members reconvened August 5 to continue the Policy and Procedures discussion it began on July 21. At the start, audience member Pat Reese asked the board to clarify its procedures for public comment. Chairman Brian O’Connor told her the audience could ask questions as the meeting progressed.     The board of directors of the Family Health Center (FHC) in Longview on Tuesday voted to begin negotiations with Wahkiakum County to provide primary care services in the county. Wahkiakum County officials have long been looking for an answer to the Wahkiakum Family Health Clinic's financial instability.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday accepted a $1.87 million bid to construct a new ramp at the Puget Island ferry landing. Bergerson Construction of Astoria was the winning bidder. Hickey Marine of Vancouver was the other bidder at $2.3 million. The county's consulting engineer estimated the project would cost $1.65 million. Overall, the project will cost $3.05 million, said county Public Works Director Pete Ringen.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday handled a variety of business, including: --Commissioners gave tentative authorization to Wahkiakum Mental Health to hire a full-time therapist to fill a vacant position. Mental Health Director Chris Holmes said a half-time therapist is leaving to take a job in Hawaii. Also, the department has left vacant since July, 2008, a full-time position.
