  • NSS annual steam meet to be held August 19-21

    The Northwest Steam Society will hold their annual steam meet in Cathlamet August 19-21 at the Elochoman Slough Marina. The boats will start arriving on Friday and most will leave Sunday afternoon. The oldest boat in the fleet is Uno. She started out with a mast and oars on Lopez Island in 1894. Through the years she lost the mast and centerboard and picked up a steam engine and boiler. The boats vary in length from 15 to 40 feet and there are a variety of engines.     After Little Island Creamery took first place for their brie at the American Cheese Society Judging and Competition for 2022, they got a visit from two women from France, who were so delighted with the cheese and the head cheesemaker, Lorraine Dietz, they offered her an opportunity to attend a prestigious cheese making school in France for a course in soft cheeses. “They’ve held a spot for me,” Dietz said.     The number of covid-19 cases rose by seven over the last week for a cumulative total of 590 cases in Wahkiakum County, with 10 considered currently active. According to Wahkiakum Health and Human Services Director Chris Bischoff, covid-19 case numbers remain high in the state and are actually increasing in some areas. There were two more hospitalizations attributed to covid-19 in the county in the last week, bringing the total to 39. The number of deaths in the county stands at eight....

    From a Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office press release: August 11, 2022 Wahkiakum County Sheriff Deputies and Wahkiakum County Coroner have announced that the remains of both Alejandro Ismael Lopez Ramirez, age 28, and Elmer Ronaldo Lopez Ramirez, age 26 have been recovered. Yesterday, Alejandro Ismael Lopez Ramirez was found by family members searching the riverbank in Altoona.
