According to the Washington Secretary of State Tuesday afternoon report, Kent had 49,515 votes and Herrera Beutler had 48,587. In Washington's primary elections, only the top two candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. Democrat Marie Guelsenkamp Perez leads the race with 30.97% o...

  • School district files appeal for facilities suit

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2022

After the Wahkiakium School District lawsuit against the State of Washington was dismissed with prejudice by Judge Donald Richter in Wahkiakum Superior Court on June 24, district lawyers promptly filed an appeal on June 27 and followed that with a request for direct review from the Washington State Supreme Court. The district claims in their lawsuit that the state is failing to meet the standard set by Article 9 Section 1 of the Washington State's constitution, which says "It is the paramount...

  • What a week!

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2022

Last week turned out to be an exciting week for Eagle staff. You should know that we plan ahead to make sure we cover local events, such as the Finnish American Folk Festival that occurred July 29-31 in Naselle. Reporter Diana Zimmerman already had a series of interviews planned for the weekend, but western Wahkiakum/Naselle correspondent Karen Bertroch said she would be happy to cover the event for The Eagle. I have a compromised immune system and avoid crowds. And when Friday rolled around, I became concerned about my health. My lower left...

  • It's called the opinion page for a reason

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: “If folks want to announce how they feel,” said the man, “let them do so in a paid ad, not a letter to the editor. They can print and mail their own broadsheet to county residents.” What condescending claptrap. This is a small local newspaper, not the Scientific American magazine. Most contributors write from the heart, not from a peer reviewed database. Such ‘educated elites’ might opine that we rural bumpkins are better seen than heard. Our loggers, farmers, ranchers and fishermen, homemakers, local professionals, minimum wag...

  • Democrats persecuting insignificant protesters

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: Crazy times we are living in, no? Prices for everything are soaring; the national debt has been raised again while we send billions to Ukraine in the newest forever war. Our strategic debacle in Afghanistan has our own military turning on its own with politicized brass more worried about the politics of soldiers than the threat of foreign armies. Our public schools across the country continue to repay poor academic performance with less STEM and civics and more gender bending curriculum. The summer riots of 2020, in which 30...

  • Living in the USA

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: It’s painfully clear that the Covid pandemic has caused deaths, to not only people, but sadly also some small businesses that fell through the cracks, getting the help from Biden’s Rescue Plan. Our dependence on parts from all over the world, which had the same problems, is slowly getting back on track. Jobs are at an all time high, with rising wages, though not keeping up with inflation. Gas is finally going back down. I’d like to know why, as there were massive profits for oil companies. Democrats and Biden have a bill in progr...

    Aug 11, 2022

  • Recommendation for alternate facts offered

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: Mr. Puddicombe suggests in last week's Eagle that those of us holding views that conflict with the wisdom and sagacity of the editor should use paid ads rather than letters to the editor. When I complained about election fraud in Nov of 2020, our editor accused me (in print) of writing "fiction," and announced he would print no further letters on the subject. I responded by offering to put the info in a paid ad rather than a letter. His response to me via email: "If we don't think your letter deserves publication because of...

  • Corrections/Clarifications

  • Preparations underway for county fair

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2022

Wahkiakum County Fair volunteers are already busy getting their areas ready for the big event next week, the 2022 Wahkiakum County Fair, Aug. 18, 19, and 20. Fair Manager Patty Dursteler is anxiously awaiting new asphalt for the Midway, which she expects to be done this Wednesday or Thursday. “That’s the big exciting thing for me,” Dursteler said. “That’s huge for the fairgrounds. That was probably the main reason we went after state funding, the grants, to get the new paving in here. It’s goin...

  • Weed control comments on tansy ragwort

    Aug 11, 2022

Tansy ragwort, Jacobea vulgaris, is a class B noxious weed in Washington. You might see its bright yellow flowers blooming in summer. This is a biennial plant that forms a rosette the first year, over-winters, then bolts to produce flowers and seeds the next year. Tansy is toxic and can be lethal to cows and horses if it is grazed or baled with forage. Mowing or clipping can reduce flower and seed production. Digging or pulling the entire plant is best. Herbicides applied in the spring or fall are also effective. If you need help with this...

  • Change comes slowly for food service rules

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2022

Change is coming slowly to Wahkiakum County regulations covering festival food vendors and other food service, Health and Human Services Director Chris Bischoff said Tuesday. Bischoff's comments came in response to questions from vendor Bob Hill, who had raised complaints about the county's regulations to the commission in June. Hill said the regulations were inconsistent and the fees more expensive than those of Cowlitz or Pacific counties. At that time, Bischoff said he would consult with groups like the county fair and the Chamber of...

  • Weekend marred by fire, tragic drownings

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 11, 2022

STILL TOASTY--Maybe I’m in the minority but I have had enough of the heat wave thing already! We are supposed to cool down some by midweek, which would be nice as it’s in the mid-90s at the beginning of this week, and that’s too hot for me! Here’s hoping you and all your animals are staying cool and hydrated someplace during the hotter parts of the day. TRAGEDY--Our sincerest condolences to the family of the two young men who lost their lives in the Columbia River this past Saturday; just so very tragic. A huge thank you to all those who res...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Aug 11, 2022

I am so sorry to have missed last week's Dispatch. I was hit hard by Covid just after Finn Fest. I am embarrassed to say it was my own fault because being in a big, concentrated crowd from all over the world, one might think I would have considered wearing a mask, but no. Like so many of us who had begun to think our sweet little oasis was forgotten by the Covid critters, I was quite mistaken. I finally called our dependable ambulance at Grays River Fire Department and they transported me to my...
