  • Fair princesses hard at work with varied events

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2016

It's all about the bling, people. On Saturday, the four young women vying for the honor of 2016 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen and some of their friends and family were on hand for a car wash and bake sale at the Bank of the Pacific in Cathlamet. The girls weren't wearing their tiaras that day, but they were laughing and having a good time after four hours of washing vehicles, with two more hours to go. Kyrah Scuito is the daughter of John and Wendy Scuito of Skamokawa. She's 17 and about to start...

  • Vancouver man dies in Sunday accident

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2016

A Vancouver man died Sunday afternoon in a one-car accident west of Skamokawa on SR 4. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, Sergey Saranchuk 53, was eastbound at a high rate of speed when he ran off the highway at Milepost 25.5. His 2012 Toyota Prius left the road off the eastbound shoulder, struck a telephone pole and several trees and to rest down a 40-foot embankment. Saranchuk died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The cause of the accident is under investigation....

  • County officials wrestle with income, compensation needs

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2016

Wahkiakum County officials gathered Tuesday for discussion and decisions on several personnel issues. With department heads advocating for increased spending on their employees, and commissioners, who control the purse strings, predicting a period of continuing revenue shortfalls, the officials had a hard time coming to agreement. They did agree to hire a full-time technology supervisor. Assisted by a consulting company, the county auditor's department has managed the county's technology systems for years. However, Auditor Diane Tischer wants...

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2016

For the last 19 years Poul and Zenaida Toftemark have hosted a three day picnic/party/pig roast at their Rosburg home on the first weekend of August. Everyone is invited: Neighbors, family, old friends, and potential friends. Their next door neighbors were in attendance. There were people visiting from elsewhere in Washington, from Oregon, California and Hawaii. Ages ranged from one to 80 something. Some friends arrive as early as Thursday and leave at some point on Sunday. They take advantage...

  • County, Corps have dredging agreement

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2016

Dredged sand may be coming to eroding beaches on Puget Island and at Cape Horn east of Cathlamet. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday authorized execution of documents to set up a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the US Army Corps of Engineers to set up a 10-year program that would allow placement of dredge sand at four locations that are subject to erosion. The Corps's district manager will have to sign the agreement, which has been under development for over a year. County officials had a surprise when they picked up the agreement...

  • Let entire community decide on retail sales

    Aug 11, 2016

To the Eagle: I read with dismay Commissioner Cothren's letter to the editor last week. He states that Mr. Roberts said "that Wahkiakum Co. received 10 percent revenue from the sale of marijuana". (August 4, 2016, Eagle) Fact check: He actually wrote "counties that allowed the sale of marijuana received 10 percent of funds raised in their respective counties.” (July 28, 2016, Eagle) Some months ago (March 24, 2016, Eagle) Commissioner Cothren stated "the people of the district do not want us to grant a waiver." "We don't want another drug in o...

  • Enormous ignorance surrounds cannabis

    Aug 11, 2016

To The Eagle: I read with interest James Roberts’ letter of July 28 regarding the legal sale of cannabis products in Wahkiakum County. With equal interest, I anticipated a reply on August 4 from Commissioner Dan Cothren. Reading the Commissioner’s reply to Mr. Roberts, it became immediately apparent that he had not paid sufficient attention to Mr. Roberts’ letter to The Eagle. James Roberts did not say that the county received the 10 percent of revenue given to all counties that approved legal sales of these products. On the contrary he asked...

  • This is not 1958

    Aug 11, 2016

To The Eagle: Ok, I get it. This is how politics works. I had a letter printed in this paper on 7/28 clearly stating that I had questioned the politicos in attendance at the ‘Meet the Candidates' gathering at the Skamokawa grange why Wahkiakum county wasn't receiving the 10 percent from the sale of legal and voter approved recreational marijuana. Representative Brian Blake stated that Wahkiakum County had refused to allow the sale or cultivation of this legal crop. I questioned him and Mr. Rossetti as to what we, the citizens of our cash s...

  • Important for nation?

    Aug 11, 2016

To The Eagle: After our forthcoming elections are finalized in November, and our new leaders are in place, and their promises have been made, what should they do? What are our true/immediate/important needs to be addressed/prioritized and resolved? I believe there are two main objectives of our/any government. They are to insure our safety, promote a harmonious life for all, and promote a prosperous economy. Here in alphabetical order are my five top issues that need to be resolved; Discrimination, Education (address/resolve student loan...

  • 100 year reunion at WHS

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 11, 2016

DRIPPY START--As this week began, we had some light rain, and while my lawn and bushes were thankful, I'm guessing all those that were camping weren't so happy. Those with hay down, were definitely not happy! On the bright side, this moisture keeps our fire danger level on the low side in comparison to half the western states which are burning up, so while it seems like summer isn't acting like summer right now, maybe we just need to count our blessings. While it might not be perfect, it beats fire and flooding and severe drought by a long...

  • Volunteers sought for Johnson Park board

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 11, 2016

Not that I dislike this cool drippy weather, but I think Mother Nature decided to cancel summer for this year. At least it was nice last Saturday afternoon for Poul and Zenaida Toftemark’s Pig Roast and Potluck. It looked like everyone had a wonderful time, as usual. News from Naselle: The School Board for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., for their regular monthly meeting. This is a public meeting and the community is encouraged to attend. This is an open invitation to parents, students and s...

  • Land Trust reinforces Seal Slough dike

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2016

Some residents along Seal Slough in Rosburg are celebrating. In 2005, Columbia Land Trust, which had purchased property nearby, installed two culverts on the slough in order to turn farmland into a wetland. Homeowners along Seal Slough began to notice a problem. The tide was going out faster than it had in the past and it was damaging the dike, thus threatening their homes and land. One neighbor, Poul Toftemark, started holding meetings and writing letters to the editor at The Wahkiakum Eagle....

Washington sport anglers soon will have two new options for fishing licenses after action taken by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission at its August meeting.
