  • Country barn antiques offer surprising stories

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 7, 2014

Georgene "George" Scott's husband, Bob, had the foresight to plant trees when they purchased the house, barn and land in Rosburg on the Grays River. Bob's keen vision transformed the harshly lit pasture into a shaded, lush and serene grove. They bought the house despite their early misgivings. An unwelcome odor had permeated the walls, and the mess of rooms weakened the flow in the home. After a flood, they gutted the whole house, and like the property, it, too, was transformed. They created a...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 7, 2014

On July 28, Elochoman Valley resident Bud Wickland found his mailbox vandalized for what he said was the sixth or seventh time in the last 18 months. He had lovingly crafted the mailbox by hand out of cedar and had already repaired it five or six times. "Whoever is doing this," Wickland said," is too cowardly to do this in the day time." That same day another resident on Beaver Creek reported a vandalized mailbox. This one was metal and had a big enough dent it was no longer functional. The...

  • Pancakes raise funds; farmers' market open

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 7, 2014

News from Naselle: We live in a very special place, with quite a few local businesses that depend on us to help them stay in business. I know that it is often cheaper to drive to Longview or Astoria for most items but I for one would rather pay a little more to shop closer to home and make sure that these businesses remain open. In Naselle we have a wonderful grocery store, a bank, several restaurants, a hardware store, a liquor store, a couple of espresso stands, a gas station and even a...

  • Postal hours had to be reduced

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 7, 2014

STILL TOASTY--As we go through this first week in August, it's still pretty toasty! However, we have been quite a bit cooler than other areas where upper 90's and triple digits have been closer to the norm. As Monday evening came to a close and bedtime was upon us, it was a very nice 60 degrees here while Portland was still at 91 degrees and very muggy, so it was a great time to be here in Skamokawa! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that our fire danger is high and so there is a burn ban in effect. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

To The Eagle: It was my pleasure to serve you as Grand Marshal for the Bald Eagle Days Festival Parade. I want to thank each of you for your support for this wonderful community activity. There is no way that I have the words to put you into my seat for the parade. Coming down Columbia Street with my drivers, Chelsea and Ashley, and slowly approaching Main Street, the crowd noise and numbers grew with each passing few feet. My heart was bursting with pride as spectators cheered yet another Bald Eagle Day Parade. There was love and laughter on...

  • Declining revenue means tight budget for school district

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 7, 2014

Wahkiakum School District will have a tighter budget to work with this year, with a reserve of $200,000, a number that is approximately $455,000 less than two years ago. “With every budget I try to include a $60,000 contingency item for the unknown,” Superintendent Bob Garrett said. “Because we are hiring a new teacher, that money is spent. That means our budget will be very tight.” It also means smaller class sizes. “We’re going to try to cut some costs,” Garrett continued. “If we are successf...
