The Friends of Skamokawa have announced their annual Wine and Cheese Evening and silent and live auctions. This year's event takes place on September 13 at the Skamokawa Grange from 7-10 p.m. The theme this year is "From Tasmania to Romania" and will feature wines from many different wine-producing locations. The silent auction begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. The live auction begins at 8 p.m. with Rob Stockhouse as auctioneer. “Under Construction: A Habitat for Humanity Bible School,” presented by Wahkiakum Interfaith Network, begins at 10 a.m. August 11 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on Puget Island. “Under Construction” is for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade and will run from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. daily the week of August 11 – 15. After three weeks of successful rock scaling along State Route 4, 45 minute closures have ceased as the project moves forward into the next phase, announced the Washington State department of Transportation (WSDOT). For the duration of the project until late summer, drivers on SR 4 near County Line Park, at milepost 46, may experience single lane closures and sporadic traffic delays up to 20 minutes, Monday through Friday. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife intends to close the Elochoman Hatchery this September. A department spokesman told visitors at a meeting last week in Grays River that the closure is part of a hatchery reform program. The department has said the hatchery, which raises steelhead and chinook and silver salmon, doesn't meet the goals and objectives of the federal salmon recovery plan administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday approved a new lease with the State of Washington for tidelands at the Puget Island Ferry Landing. Public Works Director Pete Ringen recommended the board approve the lease, which is administered by the state Department of Natural Resources. County officials are planning to rebuild and expand the ramp, and Ringen said the agency initially planned to base the lease fee on the area covered by both temporary and permanent ramps. As college students everywhere prepare to start a new semester, the National Association for the Self-Employed has made the tuition bill easier to pay for Heather Kehrli, a graduate of Wahkiakum High School in Cathlamet with a $4,000 college scholarship. The scholarship award can be used to defray the cost of tuition, which has risen to an average of $6,185 per year for four-year public colleges, and $23,712 per year for private schools, according to the College Board.
