  • County fair opens in just two weeks

    Aug 5, 2010

MIXED START--As this week begins, Sunday was warming up real quick. Our morning clouds that had been hanging around almost all day recently, gave way to sun so it was feeling quite warm to me as I was attacking the weeds in my flower beds. I was sort of wishing for the clouds again, and by golly, for the next two mornings, there was a good deal of mist falling from the sky and it stayed cloudy all day here on Monday, while other places were really sunny and bright. While we were in the 60s, other folks were in the high 70s and low 80s, so a...

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Aug 5, 2010

The second Silver Buckle Series Open Game Show was a well attended event last Saturday at the fairgrounds. There were 24 horses and riders that participated in the timed events. We had competitors from Vancouver, Castle Rock, Kelso, Longview, Woodland, Naselle, Rosburg, Cathlamet and Skamokawa. We gave out some great prizes Saturday to the high point winners in each age group thanks to the generous donations of horse equipment and supplies we received from Watkins Tractor & Supply Company in Kelso, Terri Slape, Western World Inc. in Longview,...

  • Town council votes 3-2 for park plan

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 5, 2010

In a special meeting Monday evening, the Cathlamet town council voted 3-2 to support the proposed plans for development of a town center and Queen Sally Park. Mayor George Wehrfritz called the special meeting for a vote on the plan after council members expressed concerns at the council's July meeting. Wehrfritz and town staff submitted a grant application to fund development of the park last Friday, the deadline for applications for funding in 2011. The project calls for remodeling the lower floor of town hall into a community center and impro...

    Stevan Morgain|Aug 5, 2010

Over 60 voters gathered at the Johnson Park Community Center last Thursday to meet the new candidates and hear again from the incumbents. Krist Noveselic lowered the gavel to begin the forum, which was sponsored by the Grays River Grange. County commission Lori Scott, running for the District # 3 County commissioner’s seat was unprepared but told the audience she was running because she felt that selling real-estate, managing the Grays River Hardware store, and being a good listener had prepared her for the job. “I don’t have a political backg...

  • Man convicted of eluding, but not knife assault

    Aug 5, 2010

A 12-person jury on July 22 found a Cathlamet man guilty of eluding a police officer but not guilty of assaulting another man with a knife. Cody Ronald James Farnsworth was charged last December with assault in the first degree and attempting to elude a police officer. Officers and witnesses at the trial said Farnsworth and the victim, Jerome Palmer, were friends and had been drinking with other friends at the Duck Inn in Skamokawa on December 18. Shortly after midnight, they got into a fight as they were leaving, and Farnsworth drew a knife...

Fire departments from Cathlamet to Naselle were called to fight a three alarm fire on South Satterlund Road around noon last Thursday in Grays River. They were called to the home of Trudy and Delvin Fredrickson. Grays River Fire District 3 and Skamokawa Fire District 2 firefighters were already on scene when Cathlamet Fire District 1 arrived a few minutes later. The Fredrickson home was fully engulfed. Flames shot through the roof of the two-story house into the sky. The fire was hot and the burning three-tab roof sent billows of gray-black...

  • Denny Heck runs for Congress

    Stevan Morgain|Aug 5, 2010

Wahkiakum voters can be proud. They’re a hard headed lot in Washington’s Third Congressional District. They ask the politicians who want to represent them – to prove their worth. Denny Heck, a Democrat, running to replace Brian Baird this fall in the Third Congressional District, phoned the Eagle last week to request an interview. Heck said that whoever represents Southwest Washington in Congress must be an independent thinker, willing to buck their political party. Heck became a five-term state legislator in the 1970’s. He said he knows t...

  • County board delays action on petition

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 5, 2010

Wahkiakum County commissioners delayed action Tuesday on a petition presented last week. The petition asks that the commissioners either pass an ordinance requiring that "any and all legislation affecting real property in Wahkiakum County" be submitted to voters for approval, or if the commissioners pass no ordinance, they put the issue to voters on the general election ballot. Commissioners Blair Brady and Dan Cothren said they were awaiting comment from Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow before acting. Bigelow was occupied with a jury trial...

  • Time to pull the chair out from under Blair

    Aug 5, 2010

To The Eagle: After having just finished reading "Pull up a chair with Blair" (The Eagle, 7/29/2010), my response is it's time to pull the chair from Blair, and my reason for expressing the opinion I am is that turn about is fair play. In the month of May portion, the news is good: that we now have a full time doctor on staff in the clinic. Now you read the July section and word is the clinic has now hired a nurse practitioner. Which sounds very good, but the drawback is when the clinic changed hands, we had a full time nurse practitioner and...

  • Local involvement makes choice for sheriff obvious

    Aug 5, 2010

To The Eagle: Considering the three candidates running for sheriff, the choice seems relatively easy. Jon Dearmore is the only candidate who is currently employed in law enforcement and has 20 years experience in this field. Jon has numerous law enforcement qualifications beyond the minimum required. His community involvement is shown by his membership on several committees and boards in the county, including Wahkiakum County 4-H, Wahkiakum Community Network, Timberland Regional Support Network, Region 4 Law Enforcement Terrorist Prevention,...

  • Emergency crews, volunteers thanked

    Aug 5, 2010

To The Eagle: As many of you know, Grays River residents Del and Trudy Fredrickson lost their home in a fire last Thursday. I would like to thank all of the emergency crews that helped on the scene, including crews from Grays River, Cathlamet, Skamokawa, Dist. 4, and Naselle. Fortunately Grays River volunteer Jon Gudmundsen, who is a battalion chief for Kitsap County, was first on scene. He did an excellent job of commanding the scene and helping the crews work together to get the fire out. My husband Troy Norris was in charge of staging. He...

  • Customer service impresses writer

    Aug 5, 2010

To The Eagle: On Thursday, July 29, some time after midday, I renewed one of our vehicle license tabs online. The next morning I picked up the tabs from our Post Office box. Wow. Thank you Wahkiakum County Auditors Office. Kathleen Morgain Skamokawa...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 5, 2010

Editor's Note: The house of columnist Trudy Fredrickson and her husband Delvin was destroyed last week by a chimney fire. See the story here for more details. Once again, I have to thank God for this wonderful place we live in and the awesome folks who live and love here. All I can say is thank you everyone who has offered us everything you can imagine after our house burned last Thursday. While some of you were reading my column about the Olson Family fire, my house was in flames and was a total loss. No one was hurt and all our animals were...
