Central Youth Baseball 10 year old Allstars completed their season with an outstanding state tournament in Kelso. The boys finished in third place with wins over top seeded Kennewick teams. Longtime Cathlamet resident, Joseph W. Vanderwood, 85, passed away July 28, 2011. He was born June 16, 1926 in Puyallup to Joseph and Pearl (Wardle) Vanderwood. Joe graduated high school and joined the Navy, serving during both WWII and Korean Wars. He married Mary Camacho on August 13, 1950; she preceded him in death March 23, 2011. Faye graduated from Wauna High School in 1938 and attended Linfield College. She married Ben Peterson on September 20, 1947 and they moved to Puget Island to raise their family; he preceded her in death in 1986. Nest week, Cathlamet's Elochoman Slough Marina will be filled with the chugging sounds of steam engines. The Northwest Steam Society will hold its Annual Steam Meeting August 12-14 at the marina, drawing steam engine enthusiasts and their machines from all over the Pacific Northwest. Fluctuations in timber markets and legal wrangling in courts is having an effect on the revenue Wahkiakum County will receive from harvest of timber on its state-managed timber trust lands. Timber revenue is an important part of the county's Current Expense Fund budget and contributes about $1.12 million per year. The Wahkiakum County Assessor's office has many problems that need to be addressed, according to a draft report from the state Department of Revenue (DOR). Assessor Bill Coons, who took office January 1, requested they inspect his office, report on shortcomings, and make recommendations to address them. The Wahkiakum Public Utility District board of commissioners met briefly Tuesday for updates on Bonneville Power Administration wholesale power rates and current projects before they held an executive session to discuss litigation. The Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization announced Wednesday evening a plan to update property values for Puget Island land parcels. The board annually hears appeals of property assessments, and, when Islanders received their assessments in 2010, the board had 170 appeals. The Wahkiakum Chinook wedge that a Portland couple found in 2008 is a welcome addition to the Friends of Skamokawa’s collection, said FOS archivist Keith Hoofnagle. The seven-inch long wedge shows the chipping that formed it. Native tribes made wedges of varying sizes from wood, often yew, or from antler.
