COOLED OFF--As this week began, we woke up to wet pavement on Sunday morning- a big change from just clouds, sun and wind. I'm sure my lawn enjoyed the little drink. Water systems are taking a hit as people use a lot more water this time of year, but the sources are down to a trickle for some of us rural folks on springs and wells. As we head into a brand new month, don’t forget to conserve water, as many places are facing shortages. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthday this week are Sheran Parker, Jae Stewart, Nance Collupy, John L. M...

A warm sun and summer breezes brought out a couple of kite flyers on Saturday at Skamokawa Vista Park, but it was quiet at the annual Vendors’ Market. Between the rummage sale and the baked goods in the church and the half dozen tables set up in the park, there was little business to be had. Even Ralph Keyser, conductor for the Historical Society’s train, had little to do but work on his tan. When the wind kicked up a bit, a lone kite buzzed and a vendor began to take down her tent and load her...

In 2002, the state of Washington passed legislation to create more affordable housing in communities all over the state. Counties were requested to collect fees on real estate transactions, commonly called recording fees. In 2005, hoping to reduce homelessness by 50 percent in a 10 year period, the state expanded this legislation, directing counties to collect a second recording fee. Forty percent of the monies received go to the state and 60 percent remain in the county. Averaging collections...

The ban is in effect through September 30 and prohibits campfires in developed campgrounds and other recreational fires. The ban also prohibits prescribed...

To The Eagle: Alert readers have been wondering about last week’s photo of the Birnie Slough River Rats and their prizewinning entry in the Eagle Day Parade. Who are these people and where did they come from? This group came together years ago when longtime residents of Puget Island, Melissa and Jerry Chase, began inviting friends from the Greater Portland Area up for the Bald Eagle Day Festivities. Generally 20 to 30 friends show up. Some stay with Melissa and Jerry in their lovely 1938 houseboat on Birnie Slough, others check into the h...
To The Eagle: Just getting back from the recycling bins by the high school with feelings of sadness and disgust. Because of all the garbage in the plastics bins, I will take my two bags to Longview and put only the plastics in the bins, saving the bags for later use or put them in my garbage at home. There was garbage outside the bins and the smell of garbage from the bins. In Longview there are signs that people misusing the recycling area could be fined. Is that true here? If not, it should be. Please use the area as it is meant to be used....

To The Eagle: The creation of a self-help, low-income housing project on three acres of unimproved land adjacent to the existing Glengate development in Cathlamet sounds like a great idea! But are residents prepared to spend more than $58,000 in public funds per acre on a project whose details are nebulous? The project is to contain a mix of 16-20 units of new owner-occupied homes and apartment rentals. According to Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Lower Columbia Community Action Program (CAP), the project 1. Allows...
