    Photo and story by Sunny Manary He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t make eye contact. But his painting caught the eye of his caregivers. Christopher Taylor, son of Cathlamet resident Dian Eakin, is autistic. For the past 20 years, he has lived in a Spokane group home. The painting was selected as the representation of what autistic children can do, Dian said.     Each summer, the Community Foundation celebrates a year of service to the Lower Columbia area with a summer Garden Party at the Julia Butler Hansen Heritage Center in Cathlamet. Bob Crissman from Gallery of Diamonds in Longview has donated a diamond pendant for a drawing during the event. Food is provided and music by Greg Parke as well.     Cathlamet Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” got off to a grand start on Wednesday morning, July 9.   • School board acts on budgets, hears maintenance needs

    The Wahkiakum High School Board of Directors met July 23 to discuss and act on budget and maintenance projects for the coming school year. Superintendent Bob Garrett told the board that a budget extension was necessary for two funds in the 2007-08 budget. For the general fund, he recommended an increase from $4.8 million to $5.06 million because of unanticipated high inflation.     The Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office will sponsor a Prepare Fair to celebrate the National Night Out (NNO) on August 5 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa.     The annual Grays River Covered Bridge celebration will be held this Saturday in Grays River. The Bridge Celebration will be held at Ahlberg Park on the south end of the Bridge beginning with a walk/run at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 7 a.m. The awards ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. Music and dancing begin at noon.     Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday ordered department heads to make budget reductions totaling $104,000. The cuts are the first round in county government's efforts to cover a $1 million revenue shortfall for 2008. The cuts include $5,160 in reducing the board's administrative assistant to a four-day work week; $60,000 in the sheriff's office, $10,000 in Superior Court, $3,333 for the prosecuting attorney's office, $10,000 in the health department, and $16,000 in the solid waste program.     Effective 12:01 a.m, tomorrow, (August 1), the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in cooperation with officials from Wahkiakum County, is enacting a ban on all outdoor burning. All land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning will be banned until further notice. Silvicultural burning is usually associated with timber operations or other forest practices on unimproved or forested land.
