  • Crocheting business helps woman deal with struggles

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 30, 2015

Jennifer Oxley is learning to make metaphorical lemonade with a crochet hook and a lot of yarn. Oxley, 48, the daughter of George and Barb Silva and the mother of two girls, knows a bit about how an unexpected loss can derail a life along with all the hopes and dreams one gathers along the way. A little over 10 years ago her immune system started shutting down. She had just finished her prerequisites and was in her second semester of the nursing program at LCC. "I was getting bronchitis a lot,"...

  • Backman withdraws levy lift proposal

    Rick Nelson|Jul 30, 2015

Commissioner Mike Backman has withdrawn his proposal to fund various community programs with county levy funds. Backman announced at Tuesday's meeting of the board of commissioners that he wanted to wait till 2016 to send the proposal to the voters. That will allow more time for proponents to explain the proposal to the public, and it will also allow officials to make sure legal details were correct. Otherwise, the board would have had to approve the ballot language next week in order to make the election ballot this November. "We'll give it a...

  • County, USFWS discuss dike access for anglers

    Rick Nelson|Jul 30, 2015

Wahkiakum County commissioners and US Fish and Wildlife Service managers are working to clear up a misunderstanding of angler access to closed portions of Steamboat Slough Road. Fish and Wildlife completed this year the construction of a new dike setback from the original dike. The shoreline was eroding under the original dike, and a geotechnical engineer warned the area could suddenly slide into the river, thereby breaching the dike and flooding the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refute. The US Army Corps of Engineers designed the...

  • Citizen discusses tax levies and RCWs

    Jul 30, 2015

To the Eagle: There are several RCWs regulating the amount of taxes which can be levied against properties by the various taxing districts. At the July 21, 2015 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, two different levy limits were being discussed. I was discussing the 1% increase the county may add each year to the prior year’s levy amount. Assessor Bill Coons was discussing the maximum levy rate the county can have. Commissioner Backman was proposing a “levy lid lift” which is actually a lifting of the “1% lid” otherwise imposed b...

  • Creative management needed, not more taxes

    Jul 30, 2015

To the Eagle: Our county fair is dying from natural causes, chief among them being the steady geriatrification of our local population and the flight of agricultural enterprise to less restrictive, more profitable shores. There are possibilities for rejuvenation that have been suggested but remain untried. The fairground has unused acreage on the west side and undeveloped waterfront in the northeast corner, giving it the potential for a demolition derby, mud-a-thon, racing events, ox, horse, tractor, and doodlebug pulls, and aquatic activities...

To The Eagle: Our signs for Puget Island and Cathlamet, and even Erikson Park have been redone and they look fabulous! Thank you so much to whomever worked to make these signs look new and beautiful. I smile every time I see one. I especially love the red barn on the Puget Island sign. Kim Sharp Puget Island...

  • County board okays commercial appraiser

    Rick Nelson|Jul 30, 2015

By a 2-1 vote, Wahkiakum County commissioners approved measures to restore the position of commercial appraiser in the county assessor's office. Assessor Bill Coons has been seeking the move for several months, and commissioners had so far rejected the request, saying they would consider it for the 2016 budget. The department's deputy appraiser resigned last spring and moved away from the county.Coons, a certified residential appraiser, has hired Michael Daley, a former Department of Revenue appraiser who is certified as a commercial...

  • Broadway Street parking disrupted as town repairs sewer lift station

    Jul 30, 2015

The Town of Cathlamet is replacing the pumps in a sewage lift station located at the foot of TugBoat Alley. The work may disrupt traffic on Broadway Street. The town public works crew has installed a surface line to divert flow to another line leading to the station that pumps the waste water to the treatment plant. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said that to do this safely, it is necessary to stop the flow at the upstream manhole at the foot of Broadway. The diverted flow is being pumped from there (near Helping Hands Food Bank) to...

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 30, 2015

THE END--Tomorrow marks the end of yet another month, which just seems impossible! I hope you enjoyed last weekend, which was a little cooler; just fine with me! Supposedly we'll be back to warmer temperatures by the time you read this, so here's hoping you've been dealing with the heat. I heard we could be in for another long stretch of very hot temperatures, so brace yourself for another heat wave! Sadly, more children and more animals have been left in hot cars in other nearby towns and deaths have resulted, which I just find totally...

  • People step up for Tsuga with Model T display

    Jul 30, 2015

To The Eagle: I want to send a thank you to a few people who stepped up for the gallery and the parade on Bald Eagle Days. I had mentioned to Ray Badger that we had a spot in front of the gallery and it would be cool to display a Model T out front because we have that Model T fender hanging over the gallery door. People could get a better idea of what it belonged to. Ray had Bill Ower bring his Model T truck to the gallery the Wednesday before the parade. David Goodroe measured the bed and said...
