Lifelong Wahkiakum County resident Robert A. Haataja, 91, died in Woodland, on July 16, 2014. He was born in Deep River on Sept. 4, 1922, one of twins (Mildred) born to August and Mary (Hanson) Haataja. He began working in the woods at an early age and for the better part of 20 years was a “donkey engineer.” During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 11th Armored Division, taking part in the liberation of the infamous Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria. A former Cathlamet resident, Elsie Harriet Pedersen, age 90, of Ocean Park, died at home on July 22, 2014. Elsie was born on September 4, 1923 to Jens and Martha (Vee) Hanson in Astoria. She attended and fulfilled her schooling in the Knappa schools. After schooling, Elsie worked at Newberrys and for Dr. Rafferty. Elsie married Lyle Pedersen on February 18, 1946 in Vancouver, WA. The 6th Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral Longboard Festival will get underway next week in Cathlamet. The festival will have events for four days and bring over 1,000 people to Cathlamet to watch the competition. Wahkiakum County commissioners decided Tuesday they wouldn't proceed with drafting an ordinance to regulate public nudity. Last week, a Westend couple requested the ordinance, saying a nudist had moved into the area and was offending people traveling along the county road by appearing nude outside his home. With an ordinance being drafted to govern marijuana growing businesses, Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday voted 2-1 to end their moratorium prohibiting those businesses. On July 22, at 2:30 p.m. Wahkiakum Fire District #4 responded to a mutual aid request from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue for a wildland water tender and wildland brush truck. Tender 408 from District 4 Ocean Beach Highway station and Brush 405 from the Elochoman Valley station responded. After the inch or so of rain in my rain gauge last week, it has been nearly perfect weather as far as I’m concerned. My kids and grandkids from California thought so, too. On July 23, a deputy responded to a request for a welfare check when someone noticed that a resident had not been picking up his mail. David Willis, 64, of 22 N.
