He spent his youth growing up in Cathlamet. Bob loved the outdoors, working in the woods as a logger, commercial fishing with his uncle “Bud” hunting and fishing with his brother Bill and his parents, being at the river, and spending time with his daughters, canoeing and camping. He especially enjoyed time with his friends and his mother Esther, whom he consider...

The Wahkiakum Public Utility District board of commissioners adopted a code of conduct for board members at its meeting July 19. While the resolution does not contain penalties, board members are required to conduct themselves ethically and lawfully, and with proper decorum. The board also passed a resolution reducing required reserves of the Western Wahkiakum Water system to $20,000 from $40,000 for the next three years. The water system required an updated comprehensive plan expected to cost $21,500 and requires expensive work to fix a leak...
The Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization this week is presenting a plan for handling property assessments from Puget Island. Board Chair Nick Nikkala, Deep River, and Clerk Colleen Haley, Grays River, reviewed progress on Puget Island appeals at the Tuesday meeting of the board of county commissioners. Nikkala reported that Haley had put in hundreds of hours and about 200 hours or work still remain. Nikkala said the board had established classifications for parcels on Puget Island, verified sales data from 2006-2010, and made a trending...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners Dan Cothren, Blair Brady and Lisa Marsyla, who participated by phone from her vacation in California, discussed Indian Jack Slough habitat restoration, a deteriorating culvert on the Elochoman River, and handled other business during their meeting Tuesday. Dan Friesz leads Columbia Land Trust’s habitat restoration project for the 185 acre property at SR 4 opposite the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge, called the Indian Jack Slough property. The Columbia Land Trust’s plan will result in the filling of nearly 3,500 fee...
Skamokawa Vista Park, one of Wahkiakum County’s treasures, is the result of three local Grangers’ efforts to cash in on federal government development funds. Years after Wahkiakum Port District 2 was formed, the port bought the site that would become Skamokawa Vista Park. The 75-acre park that now features camping, yurts, RV sites, day use and picnic areas and baseball and tennis courts, along with beaches, a boat ramp and stunning views downriver, began when Carlton Appelo of Rosburg, Robert Larson of Grays River and Ture Oman of Puget Isl...
The Wahkiakum County Board of Equalization announced Wednesday evening a plan to update property values for Puget Island land parcels. The board annually hears appeals of property assessments, and, when Islanders received their assessments in 2010, the board had 170 appeals. Normally, the board has around 20 appeals, said Chair Nick Nikkila, and so the board decided to look at the assessments. They found a hodgepodge of value classes set by an appraiser who retired in early 2010, Nikkila said, and neither the new appraisor nor board members...
To The Eagle: Last week's Eagle contained an obituary for Ken Terhaar which listed his extensive community involvement in the Longview area, but what was not included was the role he played in Wahkiakum County. I would like to make sure that local residents realize this and how important it was. For a number of years, Ken served on the board of the United Way of Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties. In that capacity he was appointed to serve as the liaison between that organization and St. James Family Center, which has long been supported by it....
To The Eagle: For years LNG energy speculators promised us, “If we import foreign LNG it will diversify the supply and stabilize natural gas prices.” Now they claim, “If we export our generous supplies of domestic natural gas in the form of LNG it will stabilize prices.” Thanks to Ted Sickenger (Oregonian, July 17) for exposing this ultimate bait and switch scheme. If we allow these energy speculators to export away America’s energy future, you can kiss any form of economic recovery goodbye. In addition LNG terminals will destroy critical...
To The Eagle: It looks like EGT Development’s Larry Clark made a very clever move in his quest to hire non-union workers at the Port of Longview. This battle closely resembles a chess game, Larry’s latest move to hire a different union to man the work at the Port is an effort to pit one union against another. Now, instead of focusing the ILWU’s efforts on EGT ‘s earnings, $2.5 million yearly, they created a distraction. Meanwhile, a CEO from a very large international based corporation has decided to change the way we operate here in Cowlitz...

Knife River Company brought the last load of concrete on Friday that was needed to finish the two horse barn walkways! This second pour was just as big as the previous pour, but we were experienced concrete workers now, so it seemed to go a little faster. Bill Chamberlain drove his backhoe to the cement truck, the bucket was filled with concrete, he drove into the barn, dumped the concrete, then the crew pushed it into place. Thanks to our cement project crew: Ed Stevens, Mark Cothren, Jerry and Valle Ledtke, Mike Antijunti, Cody Vik, Dave and...
Once again, I have to congratulate my staff for getting The Eagle out while I was on an unscheduled vacation last week. Betsy, Geri and Caroline did a whale of a job picking up the loose ends. Ruby was on vacation, too, a planned vacation, and she's picked up a big load since she came back. It's nice to know that the paper is in good hands. Not only does the publisher not have to worry, but our subscribers also have the best quality product coming to them that we can produce. I use the term vacation loosely. I developed an infection in my leg,...
My apologies to everyone for the delayed reopening of the now combined Community Computer Center and the Grays River Valley Library. We had a few issues with the ethernet cables and computer hookups. We will be setting new, expanded hours for the computer center and library, and hopefully will be open next Thursday at 1 p.m. We hope you will check out the changes and continue to enjoy your Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. If you have questions, please call me at 465-2960. Only one more week until the 14th Annual Potluck, Pig roast...
