  • Head to Vista Park for Vendor's Market

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. We do seem to be getting some breaks by afternoon though, so the day isn't totally a wash! On the bright side, we don't have to worry about forest fires like they do in other states and out here in the valleys, we know our water systems will keep chugging along, so that that's the good part about seeing some of this wet stuff. For hay makers, it's been tough as the...

  • Sheriff's Report - July 26, 2012

    Jul 26, 2012

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: July 16--3:52 p.m. A Columbia Street resident reported that they were receiving fraudulent emails. They were referred to the Attorney General's office. 6:39 p.m. An East Valley Road resident reported an altercation between two men, near the caller's property. A deputy made contact with both parties. 6:45 p.m. A West SR 4 resident reported that her 19-year-old foster daughter with special needs, had left the...

  • Young riders experience Horsmanship Challenge

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

Local equestrians have been horsing around in mule country thanks to the Wahkiakum County Fair Board and the Island Riders 4-H Club. Grandparents, grandchildren and a plethora of people in between donned cowboy hats and belt buckles last Saturday to take part in the second Horsemanship Challenge of the summer. Participants enjoyed two speed events, two trail events and two ranch events. A smiling Landon Luce said, “This is my first year and I love it!” The third grade student at JA Wendt Elementary, clad in a green plaid shirt and a helmet for...

  • Timberlands Library serves summer readers

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

The walk is lined with aquamarine and canary colored flowers, over the entrance a banner boasts ‘Dream Big, Read!’, as the sliding doors open a tree with purple and teal branches holds cosmic ornaments boasting the names of young readers; it is summer at the Naselle Timberland Regional Library. Inside, librarians are ready with reading kits that include a reading log, a bookmark and coupons to Papa Murphys, McDonalds and the Point Defiance Zoo among other goodies. Children like Courtney and Rachel Paul participate in a scavenger hunt, sco...

  • Increasing cost of new ferry a concern

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

The estimated cost of a new ferry continues to grow, and county officials are considering whether or not to adopt the latest design change. Several years ago, when the board first began planning for a new ferry, commissioners said they wanted the vessel to be able to accommodate large tractor trailer truck combinations. A new ramp was designed and constructed, with dimensions suitable for large trucks. Another engineering firm, Elliott Bay Design Group has been working on the design and plans for the new ferry; they and county commissioners...

  • Georgia Pacific, Clatsop County settle property tax dispute

    Melissa Linquist, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

Georgia Pacific - Wauna Paper Mill contributes greatly to the Wahkiakum County economy, employing residents to help in the production of pulp and paper products. But the company expends much more across the river where Wauna pays a total of $3,410,536 a year in property taxes to taxing entities in Clatsop County, making it by far the county’s biggest single taxpayer. Under the Lower Columbia Maritime Enterprise Zone for construction of its new No. 6 paper-making machine, Georgia-Pacific was granted tax exemptions in 2004. The exemption e...

  • Candidates speak at forums

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

Wahkiakum County's political season got into full swing this week with the arrival of primary election ballots in the mail on Saturday and candidate forums Monday in Cathlamet and Tuesday in Grays River. Two write-in candidates have also made an appearance. Longview computer store owner Tim Sutinen announced a third try for election to the legislature; he is running as a write-in for District 19, Position 2; incumbent Brian Blake is seeking re-election to that position. On Tuesday, Puget Island resident Dennis Gordon sent The Eagle a letter to...

  • Canadian couple canoeing the length of the Columbia

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 26, 2012

A Canadian couple passed through Wahkiakum County this week as they completed a canoe trip along the entire length of the Columbia River. Joe and Nan Zaccolo of Coquitlam, BC, overnighted at the Elochoman Slough Marina this weekend as they neared the end of their quest. The trip has been a lifelong dream for Joe, age 74. He grew up in Trail, BC, where the southerly flowing Columbia divides the town before crossing the border into Washington. "I built a runabout boat while in high school," he said. "My mother never let me have the thing. It...

  • Business offering designated driver rides

    Jul 26, 2012

A Rainier, Ore., business is bringing a new service to Wahkiakum County--they provide teams of safe drivers to conduct people home from bars and taverns. Tony Cataldo, proprietor of "Designated Driver--Safe Ride Home" has set up a team in the Skamokawa area. "We've been operating in Rainier for five years," Cataldo said Monday. "A local resident contacted us and suggested we set up a team in Skamokawa because people were getting picked up for driving while intoxicated." Cataldo was able to recruit a two-person team, which are usually couples,...

  • Write in Sutinen for state representative

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: Now that our primary ballots have arrived in the mail, we have some pretty tough choices to make. There are many qualified people running for many offices but only two for each office will eventually go on the general election ballots. In a few instances, only one person is running for a particular office, but the point of my letter is to remind you that you have the opportunity to write in and candidate of your choice, if you wish. That said, Brian Blake is listed for the office of State Representative, District #19, position...

  • Lessons of the Bible open to interpretation

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: I could not believe the hateful letter in last week's Eagle about homosexuality. If we were to take everything the Bible says literally then according to Exodus 21:7 "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do." I didn't know we could sell our daughters; if I tried to sell my daughter I am sure she would object quite strenuously. Leviticus 25:44 states that "Slaves, male and female, you may indeed possess, provided that you buy them from among neighboring nations." Owning slaves is against th...

  • Islander asks voters to write him in as judge

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: Candidates for the Wahkiakum offices of PUD commissioner, treasurer, and county commissioner were on center stage Monday night at the packed Pioneer Community Church. They distinguished themselves with thoughtful and informative answers; public information and transparency at its best! Two questions addressed and paraphrased to the county commissioner candidates were: 1) what is one major goal you would like to initiate for the good of the county and; 2) what is one serious or important issue that should be addressed by the...

  • Condemning others for their lifestyle is a sin

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: The letter from last week’s editorial really burdened my soul. The writer stated that Cathlamet was “doing something immoral and disgusting by allowing the PFLAG (gay/lesbian) group to participate in the Bald Eagle Day parade, spreading gay and lesbian filth.” He asked, “When are Christians going to take a stand for the truth?” First of all, I am willing to take a stand and state that I am a Christian. What that means to me is that I believe in Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, having died and was raised fr...

  • Community asked to rally for sick mom

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: I am motivated as I write this letter to our community paper. Wahkiakum county residents and friends nearby are always remarkable at showing others what being generous really looks like. In the many years that I have lived here, I have seen many charitable fund raisers. Every time, I am awe struck at how compassionate a town can be. People are willing to give prayers, food, money, and much more when someone is in need. I know it should not be taken for granted either. Here we go again... This is my challenge for you: Please come...

  • Christianity promotes acceptance, not reform

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: A letter was published last week calling on Christians to take a stand for truth. As a leader of a church in our community, I take great caution in approaching this subject, yet I feel it is necessary to communicate that Christians are not called to publicly chastise and humiliate those we are expressing truth to. It is widely recognized among people who believe the Bible to be true in all areas that God did not intend for a homosexual relationship. They also recognize the Bible takes a stand against pride, adultery, hatred, murde...

  • Call to boycott parade un-American

    Jul 26, 2012

To The Eagle: I am writing this in answer to Len Lindsley's letter of July 19, 2012. Another Bald Eagle parade has come and gone and I believe it was a fun celebration and a good time in Cathlamet! Even better, it was a beautiful day. As a side-line to the season, it seems that we can also expect a yearly disapproving and hateful letter from Mr. Lindsley about the fact that gays and lesbians would be walking in the parade. This is America, and it is a democracy. This is at least the second time he has called for blocking these people from the p...

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Jul 26, 2012

We have many painting projects to finish before fair time and received some excellent help from The Farmers 4-H Club last week! Shawn Deal, the rabbit and cavy superintendent and Deb Gribskov, poultry superintendent, brought their 4-H club to the fairgrounds twice last week. Their first project was to paint the picnic tables with blue, lavender and pink paint. Later in the week, the club returned to spend an hour applying primer paint to the new goat, sheep and swine pens. A big thank you to Taya Deal, Nanea Carroll, Teylor Sauer, Cadence...
