NICENESS CONTINUES--While we had some cloudy mornings and the tiniest bit of moisture a couple of times, it has not amounted to much and the sun always seems to show up in the afternoon. Last weekend had perfect weather for the Bald Eagle Day festivities as the cloud cover kept the crowd, the parade folks and all the animals at a bearable temperature, and only after the parade was over, did the sun come out to start warming things up. Everyone I talked to thought the parade was terrific and enjoyed some of the new entries, as well as those...

As a result, they are the fifth school district in Washington to implement an Elementary Dual Immersion Program in Mandarin. Dual immersion goes beyond simply learning words in another language. The goal is for elementary students to attain true bi-literacy. This means they will learn to listen, read, write, speak and think in two languages....

When Wahkiakum County voters picked up their mail this week, they found mail-in ballots for this year's primary election. The only race on the ballot was for county sheriff; the only name, unless one counts "Other," was for Mark Howie, who registered as a candidate in May. The Associated Press reported July 17 that a rule change requiring counties to hold primary elections every time a partisan race is up for grabs could significantly increase the cost of elections for some Washington counties. Wahkiakum County Auditor and Chief Elections Offic...

Total employment actually increased from 3.25...
Concern is mounting among Wahkiakum County officials that county roads may be damaged in the planned construction of a setback dike on the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge. County commissioners on Tuesday said they would raise those concerns with project managers and also look at what options the county had to protect the roads. The Columbia River is eroding the dike along Steamboat Slough Road, and state and federal agencies worked through the winter to find a way to find money to address the threat to the dike. They settled on...
Wahkiakum County commissioners will open bids August 20, 10 a.m., for stabilizing a sliding slope along Loop Road near Grays River. The slide occurred in late 2011. The county road department closed the road to one lane and began planning a repair, which is complicated by the fact that the Grays River runs against the bottom of the slope. Public Works Director Pete Ringen said Tuesday that the project entails construction of a concrete retaining wall to support Loop Road in the area where the slope failure occurred. The slide material will be...

Wahkiakum County officials are planning to amend and supplement their 2013 budgets. The county will receive this year an estimated $763,000 in unanticipated revenue from harvest of timber off state managed trust timber land, and officials need to find uses for that revenue, or it will go to the state. Department heads on Tuesday reviewed their needs and requests for budget supplements. They included: --Sheriff's office: $15,600 for a new four-wheel drive patrol pickup and $49,000 to cover the salary of a deputy for the end of 2013. The...
On July 2, the library switched from one capable pair of hands to another. Five years ago, Connie Christopher came in like a whirlwind, working hard with volunteers to bring more order to a library that Noreen Holten had given so much love to, by utilizing her own unique strengths. Christopher wanted to build on the legacy that Holten left behind. Her philosophy is to always leave a place better than one finds it. Motivated by desire to provide excellent customer service, she moved the library i...

To The Eagle: Recently I am hearing that an “overwhelming majority” of people are offended by what they consider junk vehicles. This concerns me since it is an attempt to try to pass an ordinance which dictates what a person can and cannot do on their own property. A lot of what some people think is junk is, in fact, equipment used in farming, logging, fishing or some other form of business. Or it may just be someone’s collection of old vintage vehicles. If someone else’s toys or equipment offends you, put up a fence on your property so you...
To The Eagle, I would like to offer a few comments regarding the recent Oregon state legislature action to ban gillnets on the Columbia River late in its legislative session. It is noteworthy that the Oregon legislature is not acting on the "public will" per se, as just last fall the anti-gillnet group Coastal Conservation Alliance-sponsored Oregon state initiative was rejected by a vast majority of Oregon voters. Further, Oregon's latest legislative action is likely not legal under a Washington State Supreme Court case, State v. Tom Svenson,...
