Two Grays River Valley residents on Tuesday asked the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners to draft an ordinance governing public nudity in the county. Christine and Robert Symonds said a new resident of the Valley is a nudist, and travelers often see him outside his residence or even along the county road. Robert Symonds said he had talked to the man when he first moved into the area and was told the man intended to build a fence to screen his property. However, the fence has not yet been built. "You're not the only ones on your road who...
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed restrictions last Friday that would essentially block development of a planned massive gold-and-copper mine near the headwaters of a world premier salmon fishery in Alaska. The announcement came as the EPA was being sued by Pebble Limited Partnership, the group behind the proposed Pebble Mine, and the state of Alaska for allegedly exceeding its authority. The state and Pebble Partnership, which was created to design, permit and run the mine, argue the EPA should not be able...
A next big step down a “presumptive path” toward phasing out non-tribal commercial gill-nets on the lower Columbia River will be the deployment late this summer of 10 permit holders equipped with beach and purse seines, equipment that had been outlawed on the river for more than 60 years. The late fall salmon fisheries stem from fishery management policies adopted in 2013 by the Oregon and Washington fish and wildlife commissions “intended to promote the conservation and recovery of wild salmon and steelhead and provide fishery-related benef...

WEEKEND WEATHER--As I left my house Saturday morning with a car loaded full of chairs, tents, weights, and raffle items, I was met with a nasty, wet surprise as I traveled down the road, this was not going to be a fun Bald Eagle's Day in the rain and my mood was turning more dour as the miles went by and my wipers had to be turned up a little higher. Needless to say, I was relieved to turn my frown upside down, as when I got to the Elochoman Road turn off, the pavement suddenly turned dry!...

The budget for the 2014-2015 school year was approved at July’s Wahkiakum School District’s Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday. The reserve in the general fund will be $200,000, approximately $455,000 less than two years ago, and staff will be tightening their belts. “The game has changed,” Superintendent Bob Garrett said. “Everyone is going to have a budget to live with.” Two big worries have the school district wondering how to generate more revenue. The first issue was aging technology....
SEATTLE (AP) -- Washington state has lost its latest bid for flexibility under the federal No Child Left Behind law. State officials said Monday they heard from U.S. Department of Education officials to say they were not going to approve a request made about a month ago. Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn had asked if Washington schools could avoid sending letters to parents saying schools are not making adequate yearly progress and explaining that kids can transfer to a school that is. The letters usually sent right before the...
To The Eagle: As many of you know, we had a disastrous house fire on July 9 at our home on Altoona-Pillar Rock Rd. I want everyone to know that we are going to be fine, thanks to the love and generosity of so many friends, neighbors and family. It is humbling to be loved by so many. We would like to thank the wonderful people from all the fire departments who responded to this fire. Thanks, guys, for saving Shirley Cantrell's (age 92) new home next to mine and also for saving the mountainside and our shop. The house wasn't so lucky, but we will...
Debra Lawson-Bean's move to Wahkiakum County in March of this year was one step closer to realizing her dream of creating a safe haven for rescue animals. A woman of faith, Lawson-Bean turns first to God for answers to matters in all aspects of her life. A lifelong animal lover, she first had a vision of an animal shelter in 2001 and she has watched it slowly come to fruition. Her new house sits on nearly 20 acres and is home to six dogs, twice as many cats, three times as many kittens, three...
There will be a three day sight-hound lure coursing trial this weekend at Misty Rivers Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island. This is an AKC sanctioned event in which the dogs compete by chasing an artificial bunny around a 10 acre field. It is sponsored by the Willamette Valley Basenji Club, and the Friday afternoon session will be a competition for basenjis only, plus qualifying runs for other sight hound breeds. On Saturday and Sunday, festivities start at 8 a.m., and will feature more qualifying runs followed by an all-breed...
We have some changes in store for readers of The Wahkiakum County Eagle. By the end of the month, we're going to launch a new website. This will have little effect for readers of our print edition, but for readers who follow us online, we have good and bad new. First the good news: The new website will have more content. It will be easier to navigate. It will have formats for PC's, tablets, pads and phones. We'll be uploading stories and photos more often than we do now. The bad news is that at some point, and even though I hate to do it,...
Another Bald Eagle Day is in the books. By midday on Saturday, it was a bright warm humid one. That didn't stop a few thousand people from coming into town to take in a parade and join in the fun. Local firefighters, deputies and search and rescue volunteers were well represented in the parade as they showed off their freshly washed fire engines and fast cars. Children sat on curbs waiting for the continual shower of candy coming their way as parade entrants passed. There were clowns and...
