With the warm weather blossoming, people are sure to be out and about in boats on area lakes and rivers. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) reminds those people they are required by law to remove all aquatic plants from boats and trailers before leaving the launch ramp. Those that fail to do so could face a $378 fine. In Washington, state law makes it illegal to transport aquatic plants that may be unintentionally spread on area roads and highways. The construction project on SR4 at County Line Park is running right on schedule with no major problems, according to engineers from the Washington State Department of Transportation. In this phase of the project, workers are scaling the rock wall and removing debris and rocks with an iron bar or an air pillow. An air pillow is a device that, while deflated, is inserted into crevices in the rocks. When filled with air, it will break away any rock that isn’t easily removed with the iron bar. Cathlamet subscribers of The Oregonian recently received a letter stating that as of August 1, home delivery will no longer be available. Customers will still be able to purchase their papers from local racks and newspaper machines. According to staff at The Oregonian, Cathlamet is the only area affected by this change. Wahkiakum County Commissioners Dan Cothren and Blair Brady acted on a variety of business Tuesday, including agreeing to pay $9,000 in fraudulent fuel charges in Florida. The charges for diesel purchased last December in the Fort Meyers, FL, area came off a Shell credit card assigned to a sheriff's department patrol car. In last year's storms, the car stalled when a deputy tried to drive through high water on a roadway, and a tow truck had to come and pull it out. Cathlamet Councilmember Danielle Erickson has resigned effective July 29. She and her husband are moving to Oklahoma City to take new jobs. The council received Erickson's resignation last week and accepted it at their meeting on Monday. Her husband, Ryan, will be employed in the city planning department, and she has found a teaching job. She has been a teacher in the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District. Wahkiakum County officials are continuing to work on a plan to deal with a $1 million budget shortfall for 2008. Officials are adjusting to an error in Department of Natural Resources accounting which mistakenly allotted them timber sale revenue that should have gone to another timber trust beneficiary.
