  • Bald Eagle festival turns up the heat

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 23, 2015

There was one thing most everyone could agree about on Bald Eagle Day 2015. "It was hot," Chamber of Commerce Director Shannon Gildea said on Tuesday. Just 10 days earlier she had been worried about a forecast for rain. No chance. There wasn't even a cloud in the sky. Groups of people were punctuated by sunlight as they sought shade under trees that lined the parade route. One family had the foresight to set up a canopy in front of their home. The more resilient set out chairs in the sun. Kids...

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 23, 2015

Commissioner Bob Jungers voiced his frustration at the ongoing negotiation with the Town of Cathlamet regarding their water contract at Tuesday's Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting. "The town and the PUD have been involved in a contract to essentially share water resources since 1947. Two years ago, the town resolved that at the end of the term of their contract in 2038, they will no longer sell water to the PUD," Jungers said. "This contract states that during its practice...

  • County board wants beach nourishment before inland disposal

    Rick Nelson|Jul 23, 2015

Reacting to an article which appeared last week in a daily newspaper, Wahkiakum County officials this week said dredgers won't soon be dumping spoils inside the dike on East Sunny Sand Road. The article quoted Port of Kalama officials who said sand will be deposited on the Philip Vik farm as part of the Columbia River Channel Deepening Project. The project would involve modifications to the county road and water lines so a pipe line could be erected to transport the sand to the farmland disposal site. However, the association of upriver ports...

  • Silver Buckle Series at Fairgrounds on Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 23, 2015

HOT ENOUGH?--I hope you had plenty of sunscreen on during the Bald Eagle Day parade and doings, as it was definitely hot and sunny! While it's great to have dry weather for the event, it would have been nicer if it had been about 15-20 degrees cooler as some folks, like me, just wilt in that kind of heat and wind up hiding in a cool basement instead of braving the heat wave! Sunday started out like it was going to be another brutally hot day, and in some areas it was, but here in Skamokawa, a nice breeze came up and we were in the 70's by after...

  • Resident offers advice, warning

    Jul 23, 2015

To The Eagle: If you are considering theft of any kind please consider the following before you act. Anything you take from someone else without permission or making payment for is theft. This is against the law to say the least. The first thing you need to realize is that whoever owns what you are considering stealing, worked for it. They put in the hours of work or provided exchange for that item. When you steal it you are stealing their honest labor as well as what they bought with their wages. Now if this does not mean anything to you, then...

  • Good news for cops and kids

    Jul 23, 2015

It’s probably obvious to most people why this is good news for kids, but you may be wondering why it’s also good news for cops. The good news for law enforcement is in the fact that high-quality early learning and home visiting programs have been proven to get kids off to a good start so they are more likely to arrive at kindergarten ready to suc...
